Thinkpad Issues

I was hoping somebody had some ideas about this, as I'm not very laptop-literate.

My gf's Thinkpad (R50e) has been acting a tad strange lately. She was using it last night, on a full charge, and it just went into sleep mode while she was typing. Also, when you close the lid to put it to sleep, and open it back up, it gets stuck. It used to take you to that XP log-in screen where it would show who was logged in and how many programs were running, but now it just shows the wallpaper and nothing else. Rebooting does seem to fix it.

I ran full diagnostics on it about a week ago, including virus and spyware scans. She pretty much never downloads anything so I doubt it could be that, although I will check again.

Anybody ever heard of such issues before?

What you might try is to load up a bootable live linux cd, and play with that for a few hours, and see if that locks up or sleeps. You might possibly rule out a hardware issue at that point. Otherwise, it is likely a driver issue with windows, and you may need to reinstall it.

just my 2c, but that's where I would start. Otherwise, it may be a hardware issue if you reinstall and it continues doing it. But it sounds like windows is just having issues.

Thinkpads just dont run into issues like that hardware-wise, so Im betting my money on Windows having some funky file issues.

Download a copy of SUSE Live CD or Ubuntu LIVE and try it, like suggested.

Also try running the unit in safe mode (F8 on boot before windows logo screen) to see if the issue occurs. If the issue is resolved, its then most likely an issue with some other software actively running. Her AV? Some other prog? Not sure, these are hard to diagnose, and I work with these every week as an IT specialist.
