Yay! :D :D

I built a new computer a little less than a year ago with a E6600 and 2gb of PC6400 and a 7900gs ko.

In general when it comes to video cards I never buy top of the line products. I don't have the cash to throw around for something that really isn't worth it in my opinion. I try to shoot for the best bang for the buck card. The 7900gs ko has done awesome so far and has overclocked decently.

So what I have narrowed it down to is the 3850 256mb/512mb and the 3870.

Best Buy currently has the 256mb version in stock for the 3850 at a measley $160. Thats tastey! They also have the $217 3870, but who knows when it will be back in stock. Newegg has the 3870 for around $250. I game at 1680x1050 and probably will be playing The Witcher, World in Conflict, and CoD4 for awhile. I am not worried about Crysis as I doubt I'll ever bother playing it.

So to recap.
3850 256mb @ BB - $160
3850 512mb @ the egg - $200-$220
3870 @ the egg - $250
 
Have you at least considered the 8800GT? It's not top of the line but it's close and great value for money.

If you're gaming at that resolution stay away from the 256MB 3850 bcuz the vram will choke you. Instead opt for the $199.99 Sapphire 512MB 3850 like I did or if you can wait a little while longer for the $217 3870 to get back in stock from Best Buy definitely jump on that. Also note that a inexpensive graphics card doesn't always equal less than stellar performance. Ati has proven that this generation around.

Thats a good suggestion but he is in the ATI thread so I believe he is looking for a ATI card.
 
Yeah the prices on the 8800gt's are too much for what I'm in the ballpark for and they run way hotter compared to the ati cards. I'd rather take a slight hit in performance instead of paying more for a noisy fan and hotter temperatures.

If you want to buy now, I'd personally go with the 3850 512MB. If you are not in a hurry, then wait for the 3870 to come back in stock.

Sounds like a plan. Is there any news on the horizon of a price drop on the 3870?
