Thinking of replacing a Williamette

I have a Williamette in a second box. The thing doesn't overclock well, and I want to get rid of it. My dad uses it for gaming (Ut2K3/2K4, Max Payne 2) and it's also used for DVD backup and video work. I'm looking to replace it, but I don't want to spend over $200, and I don't even like the idea of spending that much. I'm thinking of maybe a 2.4 celeron for about $70, and then overclock the hell out of it. I also saw a refurb 2.4A Prescott on newegg for $110ish. Please give me some suggestions on what to get.

You might get a downgrade going with a Celeron actually. It's the Willamette core with less cache.

What motherboard do you have on this box?

Prescotts will kill your mother, rape your dog, burn your house to ashes, and jack your car so it can jump the border to Tiujana. I've seen 2.8Cs for under $200, you should pick one of those up.

P4P800, which is why the system doesn't suck. Surely a celeron at 3+ ghz would have no problem beating out a 1.8 willy, or am I wrong?

The early Williamette chips in the Northwood package were a .018 micron chip with 256k cache. The new Celeron chips are de-featured Northwoods based on the .013 die - still maintaining 256k cache. So, they're basically the same thing -

Well they're certainly burn your house to ashes, although I don't know about the rest of the itinerary :p

Don't modern desktop celerons have 128k cache?

Celery's still maintain 128k, even if it's a celerwood and not a celemette (referring back to the days of the celermine :)).

--My thoughts on all P4 based celerons: the idea of the celeron is that it's a current generation Pentium with one of it's balls cut off. Not exactly a performer, but it does the job. Unfortunately, with the P4 based celerons, intel missed and cut both balls work. It does part of the job, and leaves most behind.

I have a 2.4 celery in a HTPC box. So far its been fine for watching movies/tv/emulation. For your application, especially the gaming, that celeron is gonna be downright awful. I'd get a 2.4 or better p4 depending how much you like your dad ;) ...

Where you already have a good motherboard, I'd get a 2.4, 2.6, or 2.8C. Whichever your budget allows you. You could even go cheaper and get a 533mhz FSB Northwood. That is, unless you're planning to upgrade your ram too (I wouldn't). Just get a 2.4C and you'll be fine.

I'm in the same boat actually, only I have a i845 Brookdale motherboard :(. So I need to upgrade my whole setup soon.

If you want to buy crap I will take a dump in a bag and sell it to you a lot cheaper than a Celeron ;) . 2.8C's are less than $180 now, I would go Northwood.

I saw a 3.0C on pricewatch for $180ish. That's a really good price on those, and when I get the money, I may get a 3.0C and give dad the worse overclocker.

For games a Celery is a bad mistake. With a castrated FSB and very little cache memory I'd say the things are worthless unless your just pinching pennies on a budget box that doesn't do anything but word process and surf the web.

Get a 533 Northy or a 800MHz FSB Northy. Get whatever the budget will allow and be done. Then be HAPPY with the performance you gain.

My encoder rig does 270fps in q3.

A 2.4B would yeild about as much performance at stock on that board as a 3ghz overclocked celeron. Just something to keep in mind.

If we were talking Durons and Athlons, I have less trouble giving a nod to the Duron. The Celeron was a good budget chip, but anymore, the budget chip goes to the Duron...and has been for awhile. Buy a P4 dude...if not save your money.

The system still gets a decent framerate, but I would like to get him something with HT to help with the movie encoding so it wouldn't render the computer practically worthless while it's doing something.

Incorrect. The new Celerons based on the Northwood have 128K two way associative L2 cache vs. the Northwood's 512K eight way associative L2 cache.

And that's why they're so friggin slow.

Check out the review on the front page of the [H] on the 2.4A prescott. It shines when you overclock it.

Maybe this is what you have been looking for.

Alot of people seem to be hitting real high with those. I might get one, as I saw some refurbs for under $120.
