took me weeks to figure out smp. seems soo friggen easy now. how much hair will i lose trying to figure out bigadv? i hear the evga setup is the ticket sense im not trying to mess with linux. my 2 rigs are i7-860@4.0 8 gigs of ram. i5-750@3.8 6 gigs of ram. i read in the sticky guide that anything that does over 6000ppd can do a bigadv the 750 does 11,000 ppd. How much will a gpu client slow down bigadv they both get 9000ppd. Elsie1999 just mowed me and i just cant take that sitting down.

very easy. download vmware player 3.0 (only 3.0) and the evga vmware image. Load said image, when it's finished determine the IP it pulled from the DHCP and type that ip into your web browser. All the configuration is done from a web browser with a nice GUI. It's a very stable build, I've been running one 24/7 for about 35 days with no crashes. Compared to notfreds where I had to rebuild the virtual machine from time to time it's a breeze.

You can't run bigadv with few than 8 cores available, so the I5 will need to stay with SMP.

You can run big adv on your 860 but not the core i5 750. Invoking the -smp 8 flag on a processor that doesn't have 8 threads would end badly. You'd see a huge performance hit, it would be worse then folding for a -smp 4 flag. It would spawn 8 threads of an A2 process, your CPU wouldn't be able to work on that many at once and would just choke. Unfortunately the most you'd get out of the processor is running A3's with the -smp 4 flag, unless you drop an 860 or 870 into that socket.
 
I thought all you had to do was set smp 8

The client does read your physical cores I believe. Even if you specify smp 8, it will still only see the four cores you have. The only reason it works on the I7's is the 4 virtual HT cores, thus the client reads 8 cores and allows bigadv.

great job on the massive nowhere to hero status. the cheap motherboard msi p55-cd53 cant handle the voltage load of a overclocked 860@4.0
 
How much will a gpu client slow down bigadv they both get 9000ppd.

Some people believe a gpu client running in tandem with a cpu running bigadv will drop the PPD of the cpu greatly, but that's not the case.

My sig rig runs bigadv + 2 gpu clients, I drop maybe 1-2k PPD off bigadv that I would get if I wasn't running the gpu clients. Problem is, I can make 7k PPD per gpu client fairly easily, so I still end up on the plus side of the spectrum. :)

Don't worry about it, seriously. run your gpu client even if the cpu is running bigadv. Between both of my i7's, I usually see 1-2k LESS total credit on the one running the 2 gpu clients. (i7-2 is a dedicated boxen). I usually get around 58,500-59,500 credit on i7-1 with the 2 260s vs. 60-60,500 credit on the dedicated i7-2 only running bigadv, no gpu clients. Again, that's a 1k drop (roughly 500 PPD loss), i7-1 vs i7-2, however again I gain around 7k PPD per 260 x 2, so 14,000k PPD for those alone. I may lose 1k on the cpu but I gain 14k off the gpus.

Tigerbiten is in a similar boat...he reports that he sees a slight drop on the cpu however the gains off the gpus he runs more than makes up for it.

I saw a 3-4K drop in ppd on two of my bigadv boxen when running a video card. These were both I7s @3.33 GHz, running a GTX 275 in one and a GTX 260 216 in the other. They would do about 24K ppd without a GPU client running and just over 20K ppd with a video card running. That means that these video cards only netted about a 3-4K ppd increase for the entire system, which is not worth the electricity cost to run them in my opnion with my current setup.

Two thing probably contibute the my results:
1. My machines were significantly slower to start with, so the slow down in frame rates may have pushed me over the 2.7 day deadline or something.
2. These were both native Ubuntu machines, and I am starting to think that the current Linux kernels do not handle multi-tasking as well in Windows does.

Try it. If you only see a 1K drop on your bigadv, keep running a GPU client.


 
I see a 2000 to 3500ppd slowdown in smp depending on the gpu work being done. but with my gtx260 getting anywhere from 8500 to 9500ppd. i need/want all i can get. was thinking maybe in bigadv the gpu client might cost as much as it makes in ppd.
 
Worst case, you will still be on the plus side with a 260. Go ahead an run it.

 
Now I just have to figure out how to run with 12 cores in a VM. ;) Looks like Linux if I want to run bigadv.

I guess it depends on your clock speed.

Both of mine running at 3.8, I see a 700 point bonus credit increase on my dedicated/no gpu folder (60,700 total) vs a 700 point bonus credit deficit on my i7 920+2x 260 gpu box (60,000 for the i7 alone). Roughly 350ppd, I mean that's miniscule small potatoes for me. (especially again because I usually get around 7k PPD per 260...again, full specs in sig)

Again though it could depend on clock speed, or something else; who knows. :eek: One person's folding experience is usually different than another's, let's face it - folding is a weird beast of inconsistencies. :D

Im not even sure where to look for it.
 
It will be listed in your network.

The machine name is FAH by default, the folder is /fah. It uses SMP sharing so it can be accessed from any PC or Mac.

so from the network you would browse to //FAH/fah or you can do //x.x.x.x/fah replacing the x's with the IP address that the VM pulled (which is listed when it starts up)
Be sure to tell it that the client is on a VM (there's an option in the "add client" window for this)
 
I think the eVGA VM has screen installed. You should be able to click on the VM image, then either ctrl-a or alt-a or ctrl-alt-a (I think) to jump to a new screen, then type ifconfig to see what IP address it is using. You can then point HFM to \\<ip address>\fah\ to find the log files and stuff it needs.
 
I dont even know if it is working should i see 1%-2%-3% like i do in the smp console? task manager says 100% vmware-vmx. shouldnt i see a2core in there?

Nope. You should see exactly what you are seeing - the vmware process suching up close to 100% CPU. The a2 core process is actually in the virtual machine, so you will not see it in the host OS.
 
Update your version of HFM, your version doesn't recognize the bonus. You should be getting around 24k with the bonus factored in.
