Thinking about x800xl

I'm buying new parts for a full build and at first I thought about going with a 6600gt but after looking at the prices, I think I might go with a x800xl. Would these be "bottlenecked" by my system. Chaintech NForce4 ultra, a stick of 512 low latency ram (soon to be 1gb dual channel), and 3000+ venice. What do you think 6600GT or x800xl. BF2...BF2....BF2....BF2.....

The X800XL will blow the 6600GT out of the water, I think that maybe a 6800GT would be better for BF2 over the X800XL, I think BF2 was made to run better on nVidia cards, so a 6800GT would probably be better for BF2 over the X800XL.

Yea but you also pay $50 more... Its up to you. IMO, x800xl is best bang for the buck?

Thats what I was thinking, guess I'm going to go with the 250 dollar xl. Can't wait to unleash HL2 on this.

Because it's a TWIMTBP game? 9 out of 10 games are TWIMTBP, but that's no guarantee it runs better on Nv cards. :)

Whats TWIMTBP? I didn't exactly post it, but I wasn't exactly sure if it would run better, I remember seeing that "Plays Best On nVidia" logo in one of the ads of my magazines for BF2, I just assumed that maybe like D3, BF2 would play better on nVidia cards, thats it.

As much as I like nvidia..this is a pci-e system, so x800xl all teh way until the 6800gt prices drop in the pci-e platform... if this was agp, I would suggest the 6800gt, but nope, x800xl is wut u want for the pci-e platform :)

check out my hotdeal over on Fatwallet. I just picked up a BBA x800xl for $267 via CompUsa business. In fact, it just arrived a few hours ago.

I went thru the painful decision process, too. That Leadtek 6600GT (Anand's top 6600GT choice) is over at Newegg for $150 AR, which was very tempting. I probably would have chosen the 68000GT over all, but the damn PCI-e prices are so high. So I think the x800xl is a good middle ground. I've never spent this much on a video card before, so here's hoping I made the right choice!

wut card did you have before??? even if u had the top of hte line card last generation..you will see a huge performance jump...if not,.it's gonna be even bigger hehe.

However, Battlefield always has and always will look better on nvidia's cards... so your call...

If you can get ur PCI-E X800XL for $250 then by all means go that route. BTW "Plays Best on nVidia" doesn't always mean that... Just look at games like Far Cry...

Ya I dont know what I was reading but there is no 250 dollar x800xl. Woops. Anyway I could unlock the 4 pipelines with a certain brand of x800?

One of the bigger merchants around here has been selling an OEM Connect3D x800xl for $250 fairly recently. Plus my $250 plus tax deal.

If you can wait until you find a $250 deal for an XL go for it. I got the connect3d XL and I can run every game I've played except Far Cry at full everything (Doom 3 is not installed). It came out to be $254 shipped and it was worth every penny.

Whats your comp specs? From what I've been reading, a 6600GT should be able to run Far Cry, max everything.

get a 6800GT for BF2. its only a bit more than the x800xl

Screw all that made for Nvidia BS. It doesnt warrant another 50 dollars from me for a 5 fps boost.

Almost $100 more for the PCI-e versions. That ain't no chump change.

Agreed. Although I'm what you would call and "nvidia fan" since way back, now that I'm older and slower, the x800xl looks the way to go for a good PCI-express based video card for the money. 16 pipes, good performance, less than $300. room to OC, no additional power needed, and as of late solild drivers. I hear a lot of "get the xxxx card, it's ONLY $50 / $100 more!" and that gets kinda old when the original poster states "i have a $200 budget" and people reccomend $250 to $300 cards.

Anyway - from the research I've done, reading reviews, etc, the x800xl is a solid card - If I had the extra $100, I would go with a 6800GT. The other reason I'm looking at the x800xl is the lack of additional power and cooler temps since i'm planning on moving into a smaller (mATX) case - tired of hauling around my big ass steel Antec. For $250 to $275, the x800xl is a great PCI-express card to get.

Just My 2cW...

Peace,
Tim

"x800xl looks the way to go for a good PCI-express based video card for the money" YES!

My X800XL kicks all ass. I got it for $300 exactly, and it's great. It blew the crap out of my dad's old 6800nu, but now get's trashed by his X850XTPE (lol, obviously). But my AMD pwns his Intel (3.4 vs. a 3200+ @2.2).

I'd say for the price go for the X800XL.
