Thinking about WoW....

I haven't played Warcraft since the original one. Yes, I know I'm a loser.

But I used to play Diablo like crazy online, is WoW anything like the original Diablo?

A group of my friends play WoW and have been bugging me for a few days to pick it up and play with them online and I've been considering it.

How is it? Is it worth the $50 or so buck? Plus, I don't have the money to pay the monthly fees right now so if I do pick it up and play the free month what happens after it runs out? Do I lose my character?

It's going to be a few weeks before I can afford to pay a monthly fee but I've been thinking about checking it out.

Thanks.

I never got into Diablo. WoW is definately worth the $50 dollar investment. The monthly fee is of no consequence when you get into a game that has signifigant replay value like this one. Best money I've spent on any game, period.

WoW is much more intricate than Diablo, and far, FAR more expansive. I also agree, if you're a fan of the RPG genre, it's a must-buy, even with a monthly fee. Besides, you have a month to try it before the first charge.

From what my buddy's have told me about it seems pretty cool.

I need to run out and buy retainers for my valve's and valve springs for my car so while I"m out doing that I'm going to swing by Wal-Mart and pick it up.

WoW will keep your characters, even after you quit paying your monthly charges. That way, if/when you decide to come back, you can pick up playing where you left off. Well worth the money IMO. Both my wife and I have accounts and love it.

I HATED mmorpg games before this one....but now WoW is like crack...i need my daily fix :D

before playing WoW I had never played an MMORPG before and always gave crap to people who did for paying a monthly subscription fee. well now I am on that side of the fence and loving every minuet of it. I can honestly say that since I started playing it I have maybe played my other games a total of about 5 hours in the 2 months that I have been playing WoW. Its great and gets better everday IMO with all the new stuff you can learn and do, and meet new people to group with.

Yeah, I haven't gotten out to pick it up yet today, my XP-120 is supposed to be here so I'msitting home waiting not so patiently for it.

WoW was good for me for the first month, then it got boring as hell when I reached level 20 and realized it would take 2 hours of grinding/fed ex quests to level up.

you're thinking about WOW right now, but if you start playing it, there will be no more thinking involved.

i'm sorry, apparently you missed the fact that grinding is all but gone entirely from WoW.

Yeah there are Some "Fed Ex" type quests but most , if not all of WoW quests are
a good way to gain lots of XP.

Just because you have a quest to do doesn't mean you aren't grinding...

Of course you actually can get to 60 (max level) in WoW in 2 weeks so I guess it wouldn't really feel like grinding if it takes so little time to level.

For instance, a friend of mine (who works 40 hours a week) did the following in only the first 8 weeks:

1xlvl 60 character (max level)
1xlvl 53 character
1xlvl 50 character
1xlvl 44 character
1xlvl 33 character

Leveling in WoW is insanely fast, especially if you know what you are doing, so your fun factor will likely come from making lots of characters and doing slightly different quests as you level up more than from working hard to get to the top like in most MMORPG's.

(1 caveat, my friend has been playing WoW since the "friend and family" beta.)

I am sorry but your friend is just cookie cutting the game.

I beg to differ. Diablo II leveling was fast, you could hit mid 30s in an afternoon of playing, but it would still take you forever to hit level 99. 10 hours of solid questing/grinding got my level 19 character 3 levels. Hardly "insanely fast".

I got to lvl 10 in one sitting after installing. It has taken me about 2 weeks of moderate playing to hit lvl 25, Not bad IMHO. Though leveling slows signifigantly as you get higher.

I still don't understand the leveling and grinding thing.
Leveling = getting xp and gaining levels. There are 2 ways to level. Kill mobs for xp (aka grinding) or quest for xp. While you quest, you will probably kill mobs for xp, but there is a lot of running around that takes time. People think that without all the running around, you can spend time just killing more mobs and get xp that way. From what I've seen, grinding is faster than questing.

I hated the game personally, the pvp was horrible, shadowbane still has the best pvp despite all its bugs

you have to give them a credit card number, or a game card to use your free month

So is that 192hrs. total?? 8/24=192hrs.?

Yup. That's pretty crazy when you put it in hours o_0 Time really flies by when you play this game. I think I've been working on this character for a month/month and a half. Oh, and it's level 45, now, and probably closer to 8 1/2 days now :D

I have to disagree on this one. It is much faster, IMO, to quest for XP then it is to just grind. When you recieve a quest ... that quest will usually require you to grind mobs anyway ... so not only do you get XP for this ... but you will also gain a large lump sum of XP when turning in the quest and also recieve a reward such as an item or money.

For some strange reason I am finding it harder to save up large sums of gold, after buying my mount 5 levels ago. I guess the increase in repair costs .... im nearng 2g for a repair, plus the 5g+ for skills at this level really trains my money.

No grinding in WoW? Yea, keep telling yourself that. Just making it insanely easy to achieve maximum level doesn't mean there isn't grinding. Neither does having a quest saying kill XX amount of some guy. Right now I am just swapping between my 48 hunter and 20 priest trying to make the most out of my rest XP.

Questing is a slower way of leveling. You must still be doing quests many levels below you, because a lot of the quests at higher levels require you to run all over the place to complete them. The amount of time you spend running to and from the quest really cuts into the XP. Even if you only have to run a short distance, there's almost always some better kind of mob to grind on that you can kill faster, more easily, and for more XP.

The quests I am doing at Level 45 are located in Ferrales. These are not delivery quests but rather kill "x" number of mobs. There quests are all yellow to me, and with my mount, it does not take along time to get to the different locations where the mobs are situated.

I think the 2 minutes it takes to run to, and back, from the spot where the mobs are located is well worth 3500-7000 xp turn in + any rewards. But thats just MHO.

I don't have a credit card. Dammit!!

And thanks for the explaination of griniding and leveling guys. I still don't quite understand it but that's because I don't have the game in front of me to play just yet. Still waiting on my XP-120.

True, alot of running around is required. However, questing for XP is more fun than just grinding out a level. No MMORPG should be all about leveling. Fun is the most important factor in playing any game.

Well, if Blizzard would hurry up and get the Battlegrounds out, you lvl 60s would have a reason to come back and play. Beating the sh*t out of another person = fun? lol

myself, I'm a lvl 33, and its starting to get really boring/hard to lvl. The way I see it, I'm pushing myself to get my mount by the end of this week. If I get a lvl each day, that's tuesday and I'll hit 40. So I'm in for some tough grinding to get to 40. I just run around, seeing people with mounts, and I'm like DAMN. So I'm gonna really grind it out and hope it gets better 40+.

Just to put the whole thing in perspective: I'm a lvl 64 Ranger in FFXI (where the level cap is 75). I've been playing for about a year now. To get to 75 will take me another 6-8 months (I'm a fairly casual player, lvling mostly on weekends). From what I understand other games like Everquest have similar long, difficult leveling curves. Hearing ppl complain about the xp grind in WoW, where you can hit the lvl cap in a matter of weeks, really confuses me. You guys have no idea what real level-grinding is.

I think "real" level grinding and tedious, mediocrity, are one in the same in this case.

I used the debit card I got when I was 17 to buy game time. They work the same as credit cards, but you don't have to be 18 to get em. That or you can buy game time cards at EB or BB every few months.

go play lineage 2, or FF, or even EQ2 if you wanna know what grinding is... wow leveling is too fast imo... there is hardly any grinding in wow if any.. Im lvl 48 already too...

I think we do. That's one of the reasons we play WoW and not something else. :p (...and for the record, WoW is not my first MMORPG.)

I guess its a matter of prefrence but I've found grinding for exp is a very hollow and unrewarding experience. I like how quests take you to different parts of whatever continent you're on and yeah you're killing stuff along the way, once you get there and while on you're way back so it feels like you're getting something done. Alot of the times you meet people doing the same quest and can join up get it done quicker which for me beats the hell outta camping the same site and killing the same monsters over and over.

Also the leveling seems fine to me. It takes me (hunter ~22) about 5 to 6 hours over 2 or 3 days to hit a level. I'm sure it can be done quicker but that's my pace (still learning as I go).

I dunno, that's my experince, I hope you (the original poster) enjoy it, its a fun game.

WoW is definately worth the $50 even if you toss it after your free month. I have easily gotten entertainment value 10-fold over the cost of play.

WoW is definately the most Newb-friendly and easy to learn MMORPG. My 50 year old Uncle has never played an MMORPG, picked up WoW last week, and hasn't looked back.

I have owned it for 1.5 months now. At level 37, I have twice as much play time 9+ days (/played) into my main character as many people do. This is where I will totally reccomend it to anyone. I have had as much or MORE fun screwing around, exploring, grouping, PVPing, and dying than I have had leveling. This game isn't 100% about leveling. There are always several completely different agenda's available to pursue. As said before, this game is V A S T, not only in it's geographical aspect, but in it's gameplay. Furthermore, future content will only advance my points here.

In your case I would reccomend this game 100%. Especially if you have a few good buds to play with.
