Currently I have a GeForce 4 Ti4200 (Overclocked to a 4600)... and I'm thinking of upgrading to an ATI Radeon 9800Pro. Will there be a noticeable visual difference in gameplay, or are the two cards (essentially) branches off the same tree?

Right now I have an XP2400+, so I'm right at 2GHz.medium said:depending on your cpu, i think an upgrade to a radeon9800pro will give you a good performance boost. i don't know what kind of processor you have, i'm going to guess that if you're below 2ghz (intel or amd) a radeon9800 will suit you well. i'm then also going to assume that you don't have anything faster than that, otherwise you'd know that a ti4200 on anything faster is a bottleneck.
I have D3 now actually, but the visual experience is good on my end, the only thing I think I'd be missing out on would be the "heat wave" from a DX9 card... which I think the 9800Pro is.RS3RS said:I upgraded from a ti4200 (good cards) to a 9800 pro a few months ago. My system is a 2.66B @ 3.0 ghZ (150 FSB). I did notice a difference, but it wasn't anything as major as I was expecting. I sort of regreted it at first, but now that Doom III is out, I'm glad I did it. Though, with your processor, it might not be a whole lot of a difference...
I say if you have some extra money, and want an upgrade, go for the 9800 pro. If you're tight on cash, or aren't dying to get Doom III, etc. to play better, then it's not a huge deal.
