I have been thinking about getting a thunderbolt and there is one thing i am wondering.

Is there any disadvantage to rooting a phone?

Any other input on this phone or other verizon phone is a appreciated

what happens if your warrenty is void and you need a new phone? do you end up having to pay full retail price

in some cases you can reverse the root. I had a friend I helped root his phone unfortunately he dropped the phone and damaged it beyond repair, he told the representative straight up it was rooted however the root apparently only void the warranty of the software o/s so if you take out the insurance and you damage the phone it should still be covered less your deductible I believe. I was skeptical about rooting my phone but you cant go wrong... better look / feel, free wifi tether, increased battery life, ability to run updated / customized roms, super user permission....the list goes on.

You do have the ability to unroot the phone if you so desire.

edit: makavelli beat me to it

i would love to but if my warranty is void and something happens to it i cant afford to pay retail for a phone

Thunderbolt users have free tethering till the 15th anyways. After that YMMV.

Be warned that if you DO NOT root your phone, prepare to carry the charger everywhere. It wasn't until I slapped on das BAMF ROM did I get over 24hours on a single charge.

You only void your warranty if you root the phone and forget to re-root it when you bring it in for service. Hell, most Sprint repair shops are actually cool with you rooting it, though that doesn't matter if you're with Verizon.

I exchanged a rooted thunderbolt. They don't know how to check usually at the store.

Battery life is off a lot in this phone, screen and camera not as good as droid charge or iPhone 4.
