Right now i have this really weird freezing issue with my computer. everything will got black, then the monitors will refresh and come back on only showing parts of applications or the background with everything else being shown as a black screen and then the monitors will refresh again. etcetc. the mouse moves very slow and all applications respond slow as well. this issue wont stop till i restart the computer. last night it happened when i was updating my girlfriends GPS unit.... but luckily this time i had windows task manager and real temp open. there was no increase in temperatures of the core, no increased core activity, and the ram was at about 2.4 gigabytes in use. (all i was running was google chrome and the GPS updating program). i couldn't restart cause the gps was in the middle of the update so i had to sit it out for a while. the monitors kept refreshing and the gps kept updating. after about 15 minutes though i noticed that i was at 97% usage of my ram which i found weird. i figured since there was nothing i could do about it, i turned my monitors off and and left the computer running. in the morning the computer had restart its self (dont know when).

I have run prime 95 and windows mem test and both tests pass. the timming and voltage is correct (the reported running speed is about 1299 with fluctuation instead of exactly 1333) I have g-skill ddr3 dual channel, 4 gb

would you guys think that this issue was the ram or the videocard?

also i was thinking of getting 4 gb of mushkin ram (read good reviews and runs at about the same voltage)
would i be able to run the two together (gskill and mushkin)

would it be better to buy this and drop the gskill?

and ALSo would these be compatible with my gigabyte mobo (just asking if someone knows of the top of their head. im going to work right now so cant go searching)

If you are using up 4GB of ram, and you are not a professional developer/artist/engineer/photo editor, then you have a memory leak.

Don't buy more ram to cover-up the problem. See what application is really at-fault, and see if they have a patch (or toss it and buy something else). If you give-in and double your ram, there is no guarantee that the memory leak won't grow.

I cannot believe that it would take 4GB ram just to update a GPS database (I'm assuming it's stored on-disk, and not in-memory, right?)

1. What are the system requirements for the GPS software?
2. Can you give us a screenshot of the task manager when this happens (preferably, the process tab)?

+100, doesn't sound like you need more ram for that, sounds like you do have an application problem or possibly some kind of malware that is using up your system resources.

well see this issue has been present ever since ive built the computer and it happens randomly (about 1 month). i cant predict it and never has patterns that repeat as far as i can tell. sometimes i can have my computer on for 48 hours and it doesnt happen and then after my comp is on for 30 minutes suddenly the comp will go black. ive never seen it repeat when the same application is open and im guessing the ram was used up because of hte freezing issue and not cause the GPS update. i redid the update this morning and it only took 1 hour to finish everything (which was Garmin's estimated time) and the ram never went above 50%

do you think it could be the ram and would replacing it be better?

run memtest to test your ram, for at least 15 passes, overnight or something.

ok the freezing issue is the GPU. i happened to have CCC on when the computer froze and all of the sudden the GPU usage was 99%, however the temp or the fan speed did not increase. i feel that this issue pretains to the grey screen crashes but has just manifested in another way. two times the computer has acted like its going to freeze but then my desktop will come back and state that teh display driver failed but windows was able to restore it.

computer just BSOD again
sofar in the past 30 minutes i hav e
BSOD 3 tiems
Grey striped Screen 2 times
Froze with random refresh 10 times
recovered from freeze 2 times

Try updating your drivers, after removing your old ones with Driver Sweeper. If that doesn't solve your issue, it may need to be replaced.

yea when i get home im going to

1.go into windows safe mode with networking
2. dl driver sweeper and dl CCC 9.12 package (currently on 10.1)
3. and just for kicks if that doesnt work imma try to underclock the ram from what it is (1300) however if that stops it im goign to complain to XFX because thats not the advertised running speed of the card

if this doesnt work probably gonna contact XFX about a new one

quick question:
these issues started after i had finished setting all my processor overclock settings back to stock. i realized that for some reason the clock wasnt running at my over clocked setting. so i went into bios and even though all my changes were saved under advanced frequency settings, the core would not run at what i had input. it stayed at the stock clock. i have no idea why it was at the stock clock and why i cant change anything.. and no one on the over clocking section will help or give suggestions. so after about 1hour of searching and trying i figured that if the core was going to run at stock settings i might as well put the settings i had in back to stock. after i did this the vid card started freaking out and would not run properly at all.

so now i have a vid card that wont display or let me run my computer and a bios that wont let me change clock settings (strange though that it kept my timing corrections on the ram)

i dont see how this would correlate with my graphics card freaking out but it seems hard for me to see it as a coincidence. any ideas?

reflash your bios and load optimized defaults.

are you sure it wouldn't clock back up to your OC'd settings/speeds if you ran prime95 or something similar? i'm just thinking that maybe EIST put it back to stock while idle.

when i run prime95 it goes to 2.8 GHz which is the stock turbo'd intel speed. ill try re flashing bios tomorrow and see if that helps anything

Doesn't sound like a RAM issue to me but more ram is always better, I see my usage go over 6gigs quite a bit.

i flashed my bios to gigabytes new F7 bios and still no change. i cannot over clock the processor even though i can change the base clock and multiplier. bios still ignores all my inputs
