ight, so i am building a new computer, i want a gaming computer that also can dlmusic/burn cds ect.. problem is usually that the songs and stuff get viruses and make the computer slow ect.. so i was thinking put one 40gig hd in there (for my gaming) and one 80 (for my music) that way when it goes down i am not crap out of luck

It's a good idea to have a separate drive for data, and one for the OS and applications.

Your best course of action is to combine that with common sense and learn how not to get infected in the first place.

Get a virus scanner
Learn safe surfing habbits
Grab a spyware checker, etc

If your machine is constantly getting pounded with viruses and spyware, you need to figure out how not to do that. ;)

how do you set it to where one has the data, one has the os?

if your downloading music . download what you want then disconnect. dont leave your computer connected all day to download/share music. i saw a guy bring in his hard drive to see if it can be fixed he said he had 1500 songs and he left his computer on and connected and got a really bad virus. bye bye hard drive.

I have one drive with a partition for my favorite game (daily patches) and one for Windows.
On a second drive I have one partition for the paging file and one for data storage and one for linux.

I cant say I have anything to compare it to, but I have effortless defrags and run my game at very high settings.

Get one hard drive for your OS and place it on SATA 1 (many use the 74GB Raptor with good results) and a second HD on SATA 2 (some are raving about the Maxtor DM 10 for storage).

Note: Place the OS hard drive in the system first and install your OS. Then after installed, patched and drivers are running smoothly, then install your storage drive.

Also, if you are using XP, place the page file on the the drive that does not have the OS on it for a performance boost.

Good luck.

thats what I always do... one hdd for os/programs one hdd for everything else... or an external storage solution... which Ive been using for a whiile now

what about this

HD 1 80gig
Gaming/Photo Shop/Websurfing

HD 2 prob a 60gig maybe a 80
Downloading music

i have xp corprate edition, so it doesnt matter how many hd's i use..

ill just switch the put everytime i wanna use them..

One HDD will be your C: drive. You install everything on that. The other drive will most likely be your D: drive. Download everything on that.

Nothing is going to protect your data if you're swimming in viruses.

I would imagine you are not running a firewall. Do you have a router on your DSL/cable connection? Or are you using dial-up?

If you are using dial-up you MUST run a firewall such as zone alarm which is free and can be gotten here:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=dbtopnav_za

Even if you're behind a router with NAT, it's a good idea to run the program anyway to stop malicious out-bound traffic.

im not swimming in them, but i can set a fire wall up, im on a lan..

how big of a hd to store just the os on if i do it like this?

If you are on a college LAN it's also imperitive you setup a firewall.

Any HDD you get today will be big enough to store your OS and apps on. I use a 36gb raptor, and although it is getting cramped with 14 games installed ATM it's still not bad. I would recommend getting a fast drive for your C: drive, and another drive for your files (music, movies, porn ;) etc)

"Yes".

As long as your motherboard has the correct controller, i.e. PATA or SATA.

Don't use whatever you are using to DL stuff, obviously the people sharing on that network are a$$holes

lol, i dont have viruses, i want to protect against it...

i was using kazza back in the day..
