Okay I was repairing/upgrading my computer and couldnt remember if I was supposed to leave the power cord in or not after I shut everything down (PS has a power switch on it). Instead of doing the smart thing and looking it up I had just guessed it as it needed to be in to ground properly (wrong). I had already unplugged it to move it so when I went to plug it back it sparked. When I opened up the case I noticed an unpleasant odor. Is it possible to nuke other things besides the PS in this situation since the PS has a power switch and it was off? Everything was still connected at that point (old mobo). I had installed my new motherboard and DVD-RW and when I went to power it back on nothing happened. The power LED on the motherboard says its getting power, but when I try to turn it on nothing happens. No LEDs on the front no fans no nothing. From what I have seen this is indicative of a dead PS, a bad power switch, or wrong header setup (I checked this out). The new motherboard is an Abit NF7-S with the 20pin+4pin power slot and the PS is an old OCZ 540W 20pin... I dont know if that makes a difference. Let me know what you think.

Make sure to check that you have your cpu fan plugged into the motherboard. I know on my motherboard, what you say is happening, if there is no fan plugged into the MOBO. Also if you have a videocard which requires a power connection, make sure there is one plugged in.
 
All fans are plugged in and the CPU fan is plugged into the CPUfan slot. My last mobo had the same thing but it would power on for a second then shutdown quickly and beep like hell (Soyo K7V-DRAGON the crappy KT266 one not the KT266A). The video card does require a power connection, but it is properly connected.
 
My guess is that it is probably the Power supply. Do you have one handy that you could switch out ?


I guess you could always take out the PSU in question short the pins to get it to push power and plug just one fan in or something, to see if it is infact providing power. Im not sure which pins to short tho. =(
 
Thanks for the help. I dont have an extra PS handy so I will have to borrow someones. It shouldnt be a big deal though.
 
You short the green wire to any black wire in the ATX block.

I checked the power switch by shorting the power switch header. It didnt turn it on, but I did notice a higher pitched hum. I tried leaving the HDD plugged in (I dont have any molex powered fans) and shorted the PSU. The PSU fans came on but the HDD did not spin up. I was told by another person that it may still be the PSU. He mentioned something about a fuse being blown in the PSU that protects the molex connectors or something. I am gonna swap it out with a good one just to be sure.
 
It was the power supply. I did nuke it. Damn it was a pretty good one too. I got it from OCZ about 4 years ago. Its a 525W 40A 3.3V 46A 5V and 25A 12V with a 20+4 power connector (I was wrong on it jsut being a 20). The odd thing is the fuse is fine. Its probably repairable and its still good enough to be used in todays high end systems. Does anyone know of a resource on repairing power supplies?

Another problem though... its software related however. I did a windows repair and installed the drivers and everything. I cannot enable my XP software firewall for some reason. It keeps saying "An error occured while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. Cannot complete this function." My first thought was spyware or a virus, but every virus scan says I am clean and I just cleaned out the spyware. HJT shows nothing unusual either.
