I'm thinking of installing server 2012 onto my web browsing/NAS computer which is currently located in my computer room. (It will be moved into my rack in another room)
I was hoping it would be possible to log into a windows 7 VM running on the server with a thin client of some kind. The VM needs to be a desktop replacement. Ideally I would position more of these thin clients with their own w7 vm's at a later date.

So whats the best option for a think client that doesn't compromise much when compared to a real desktop?

Would I need to run ESXI on my server underneath server2012/win7 in order to access them with VMware View? or can I just install server2012 with a win7 VM like i'd planned? Do you have any suggestions for zero client that are under 140 dollars? (I'm just using 140 because I believe I could run a linux distro with rdesktop for around that price afaik)
 
by "desktop replacement" how much "replacing" are we doing.. are you expecting to watch hulu and the like or are we talking strictly email/internet surfing?
 
OP, are you jsut talking about logging into a single VM from another room? If so, absolutely. Any cheap ebay thin client compatible with RDP would work. The question is, what do you anticipate doing with it? RDP has some basic issues with video/audio.
 
Yeah from what I've been reading just from googling around it wouldn't really be comparable to a desktop.

Another idea that I have is to get an i7 2600 with VT-d (the motherboard is a maximus gene-z which also supports vt-d i believe) and pass through the graphics card and USB controller to the windows 7 VM. Then instead of running ethernet to a thin client, I could run HDMI to a monitor with speakers. Would cost lest than a thin client setup and I could still use VMware view from mobile devices if I chose to do so.
 
Android tablets. Bluetooth/USB connectivity for mouse and keyboard, HDMI out for connection to external monitor (if necessary), and any hardware running Android 2.3 or above is more than beefy enough for RDP/remote sessions of any sort. Products like Splashtop are robust enough to do real-time streaming of HD video and 3D games. (I play PC games on my tablet over the network using a 360 controller connected to the PC in a nearby room.) You also get local storage, camera(s), WiFi and a touchscreen over a traditional thin client that can be used at your discretion. $100-200 each, depending on the hardware features you want.
