Are Thermaltake PSU's good, reliable and generally worthwhile getting? It seems alot of people on this forum like the Corsair PSU's. I chose the Thermaltake 500W PSU because it was alot cheaper then the Corsair 520 PSU. Just wanted to know what the experts think?

Thermaltake is a brand with several different product lines from several different OEM's. Some good. Some bad. Please be specific.

Your question is like "Is GM good" and then trying to compare a Geo Metro to a Vette.

Sorry about that, this is the one that I had in mind:

Thermaltake W0093RU ATX 12V 2.0 Version 500W Power Supply - Retail

Now I wanted to know if these:
CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX ATX12V V2.2 550W Power Supply - Retail
CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply - Retail

were that much better?

UL #e193705 (checked Newegg's pics of the unit they sell) - corresponds to a Channel Well Tech (CWT) OEM unit. Not that bad I'd think, but compared to the higher end CWT Thermaltakes (ToughPower? esp 850w+) they're not likely near as good...The Seasonic sourced Corsair's are far better....And have a 5 year warranty, vs Thermaltakes usual 3 year at best - low end may even be 1 (not sure).

...Bottom line is, what are you powering with it, and are there plans for expansion in the near future?....Not enough info given for a definitive answer.

[edit] Oh, and the HX series are the Seasonic's. Corsair went with CWT for the VX series (and TX no?), and did well there. But the TT and Corsair's are likely from 2 totally different platforms, or at the very least Corsair uses better caps and the like in their CWT builds.

Got to love those cryptic part numbers....

So you're looking at the Thermaltake Purepower TR2 500W.

It's a fairly decent PSU, but the Corsair units are still better. It's the Toughpower PSU's that really shine. In fact, in some cases they are actually the same OEM and build quality as some of the Corsairs.

The Thermaltakes to stay away from are the old Sirtec based Purepower (non TR2) units.

Actually, not all Corsairs are Seasonic. Some are CWT and are just as good as the Seasonics. The Toughpowers are similar, and FYI do have a 5 year warranty.

Edit for your edit...

[edit] Oh, and the HX series are the Seasonic's. Corsair went with CWT for the VX series (and TX no?), and did well there.

The VX450 is Seasonic. The VX550 is CWT. The TX650 is Seasonic. The TX750 and TX1000 are CWT.

Why is that likely? They're actually pretty much the same CWT platform except Corsair did not split the rails up on the 550W and 750W like Thermaltake did. The Thermaltake also uses good caps (Hitachi primary and SamXon secondaries.)

I believe the only difference in the caps is that ours are upgraded to 105C caps and are guaranteed to be japanese-made like Nippon-Chemicon or Hitachi or similar. Strange spec and doesn't affect anything but longevity as far as I can tell. Also might suffer less effects from capacitor aging or something, but I'm no EE.

I have never really had a problem with Thermaltake PSUs. However, there are better ones out there.

Can anyone recommend the 650W Thermaltake W0128RU Toughpower? Could I expect similar build quality to the 750W Toughpower I read about on jonnyguru? Is the buzzing only an issue on the 750?

Thanks

Go with the Toughpower. It has the best components. It is made by a different OEM. All of the reviewes that I have read love the Toughpower line. I personnely have the 1000w version and my power levels stay study.

I put the Corsair 620 in my Thermaltake Armor. It's been smooth sailing since.

meh wonders if the corsair rep is paying people to insert praises that go along with their logos.. hehe!

The only corsair employees on this board are myself and Mike Clements (posts as Yellowbeard on other boards).

You might see Bluebeard in Germany. We just hired a UK guy. I wonder what he'll be.

I run the Thermal Take Toughpower 750 and I have no issues with it at all, its quiet and the cables were nice!!

In which forum will Bluebeard be active because I'm from Germany and would like to inquire some country specific specific question like where do I get the 8 pin PCIE power cable.

I've used thermaltake power supplies for years. They tend to be reliable with decent power rails.
