Do you think that Thermaltake PSUs have exagerated specs? ie that most of their specs are too high for what the psus really are.

Not at all. Thermaltake power supplies do exactly what the label says they do. The problem usually is the power isn't where they need to be for a modern system.

For example: The 480W power supplies can do 480W, but they only have 18A on the 12V rail. That's not very much. Where's all the power? On the 3.3V and 5V rails where they'd only be useful in an older system.

From personal experience, I can say that the TWV500W is a good power supply with well spec'd rails and any of the TR2 series, which are lower end Channelwells, so they're not as good of quality as some of the Sirtech builds, but they're good values.

I am thinking about getting this:
Thermaltake Purepower W0083RU
What do you think about it?
Other people say to get this instead:
Fortron FX600-GLN
cause it's like the same price but I think it's better.

I don't really know anything about the Silent PurePower 600W (I have the cryptic XW0049LMAO69RU type part numbers) so I can't really comment from experience.

But it looks good on paper.

What attracts you to it? Is there a reason you're gravitating towards that one particular power supply?

Because I need a lot of power, but want to pay the less possible for it.
I was supposed to buy one of the PCP&C 510watts, but I think that I can cut the costs and go with that Thermaltake or the Fortron.
The main problem is that I need 50amps of the 12volts, cause I have ALOT of HDDs.

I doubt you need 50A on the 12V rails. You'd have to have a pair of X1900's, a Core Duo, a Thermochill and 20 hard drives to justify that.

Also, the Thermaltake doesn't have 50A on the combined 12V rails. The ratings for rail are independent from other rails and rails are not additive.

I don't know what the combined total output is for all three 12V's on the Thermaltake because their label isn't informative at all, but if I were to guess I'd say it's probably about 38A.

No matter what, I'm going to say the FX600-GLN is a better power supply. FSP has been more honest with their labeling (even though the FX600-GLN still doesn't tell you what the combined 12's max output is) and it seems to be a lot more efficient than the Thermaltake.
