Thermalright XP-90 temps high/ Quick Question..

Just changed from WC'd running stock venice 3000+ stock voltage @ 1800mhz and my temps still seem high. Can too much Thermal compound cause worse temps? I put a thin layer on the chip and on the HS. Thanks in advance.
 
I've often had problems with adding too much thermal paste. Now I just try to get the thinnest layer possible just to fill any microscopic gaps in the machined heatsink. Unless it's spilling over the sides of the CPU then you probably didn't add too much. Maybe you're just trying to run it at an unrealistic speed for aircooling, or maybe the thermal paste hasn't burned in yet?
 
So I just built another system with same mobo, ram, processor, and on with the stock HS it runs 8-9 degrees cooler than my new XP90. I have read artic silvers guide to install and everything is done right. Perhaps the fan it came with (thermalright 90mm) fan. I am going to order a med. speed Panaflo and hope this does wonders.
 
im in the same boat with a zalman 7000b it runs like 5 hotter? kinda wierd
 
I've 'solved' CPUs running too hot with Arctic Silver before now with just clearing all traces of AS, lobbing a decent chewing gum pad TIM and installing HSF as normal. Personally I never directly apply AS to the core, but use a credit-card as a 'mixing' base to get just a touch on a small putty knife and apply it like that, my layer ends up so thin you can read the print on the CPU core through it, but damn does that work well.

With my 2.66GHz celly I lapped the heatspreader & heatsink and just polished in some AS, I'm considering trying this with my A64 but I've not really got the confidence for it.
 
On my AMD xp 2800, my Thermalright Si-97 cooled the exact same as my TT water cooled kit... I hate HS's :rolleyes: :D
 
you can put too much AS5 and it will act as an insulator. putting the BB sized dot on the core and smushing it down with the heat sink is by far the best method for application ive come across.
 
I did that last night and its like nothing... Never though I would buy a retail stock cooler over a Thermalright for better temps. LOL I just think the thermalright fan that came with it has to be WEAK :rolleyes:
