With the fan removed, we can start to see more details of the V1's construction. The base portion mounts to the front or GPU side of the card, and the heat pipes curve out and around, placing the fin portion over the back side of the card. With the fan on that side, some additional cooling is provided to components on the rear of the card, such as memory chips, in some cases.
However, the image below illustrate one shortcoming of the V1, at least as far as the nVidia 6800 cards are concerned. The design and placement of the base and heatpipes is such that the user will be unable to cool the memory chips on the board. With most cards, this is of only modest concern, but we were a bit worried given that even the stock cooler of the 6800GT also cools the memory, as well as most aftermarket coolers we've looked at. Only time will tell if this is truly a problem.

Wow it whoops the NV5. Good stuff.

This reviewer mentioned that the poor design left no cooling for the RAM chips, and actually decreased the RAM overclock from the STOCK cooler. Yet totally ignores that when grading it. So you get a bigger core OC at the cost of the RAM OC. And that is worth my $$$ and voiding my warranty for what reason? give me a break, this thing's a total ripoff.

It said it was better, and the V-1 DOES cool the mem chips with the 6800 all chips have ram sinks and 2 use a thermal pad.
