I'm thinking about upgrading my mobo and proc (my 2500+ just doesn't have the horsepower to keep up with my 6800GT). Naturally I'm looking at an Athlon 64 chip (mobo undetermined). I'd like to stick with my SLK-800 HSF as I'm quite pleased with it (and don't really want to spend money on another), but will it be able to handle something in the range of about an A64 3200+? Comfortably, that is?

if im not mistaken, you wont be able to use your slk800 on the a64 cpu.
 
Yeah I've been thinking I might just get a new one and not chance instability (or worse).
 
I don't think you'll even be able to attach that heatsink if you tried. My A64 setup came with a HSF that attached to a bracket that screws to the mobo (replaced with a XP-90). I don't remember even seeing the hooks on the CPU socket to hold an old style HSF, I could be wrong though.
 
Yeah I hear good things about the XP-90. Can one afix an 80mm fan to it, though? I ask because the XP-120 is made for a 120mm fan...
 
The XP-90 has ridges and fan clips for an 80mm fan and a 92mm fan so you can choose which size to mount to it.
 
Go for a 92mm if you get an XP-90...big fans are good stuff in my book :D
