So anyways//I might drop the hyper 6 for the xp-90 IF, do anyone of you people who own a thermalright xp-90 non copper with a GIGABYTE k8 series motherboard with the plastic backplate, use the plastic backplate instead of what Thermalright instruct to do? What they say is us Gigabyte k8 boards owners need to buy the metal one to use the xp-90....

and the xp-90 don't even weigh that much...300 or so kg? or w/e term we use for heatsinks...

We use the gram for the heatsink. Something tells me a 300 kg heatsink MIGHT just give you some trouble with motherboard warping, or maybe snapping. :eek:

In all seriousness, no, it doesn't weight that much; however, its copper brother the XP-90C does, and it requires a backplate if I'm not mistaken.

I'll tell you what I was told in one of my threads today that was most useful:

www.svc.com has the XP90 on sale for $24.99, that's a great buy for a normally $40+ heatsink. Head on over and check it out. :)

yah I know, I am really thinking about picking teh xp-90 up..really really..but the backplate thing just gets on my nerves...I mean it only weighs 300 or so grams..and they say it requires a metal backplate when I am about to throw a hyper 6 on it, which weighs 900 grams, yes you heard me, 900 grams, but they do include the metal backplate with teh hyper 6, but I am VERY afraid in the long run it might drop down and kill my 6800 ultra, but I was thinking, maybe I should get teh hyper 6 and not worry about the xp90 and I would just toss a couple of zipties to teh hyper 6 and the top of my case :)..maybe..

and O yah lol, I was the one who told you about teh deal :)
 
meh if u decide to get the hyper 6, zip tie it to a support bar or any part of the case for support ;) check out sum pics in the post your rate my cables thread, lotta peeps hav done that

UBEREDIT:

You shouldn't need a backplate with the regular XP-90. It's light enough that that's not necessary. Only the XP-90 C needs a plate.
 
yea, that sounds right. one more thing to add.... this heatsink is AMAZING. :D
 
dang thermalright! wait...dang gigabyte for not following amd's instructions! ahh freak teh metal back plate thing, I ma grab the xp-90....300grams aint nothing compared to the hyper 6's 2lber heavyweight :) I'll just put a few layers of duck tape on the plastic backplate so it wont snap..and maybe a couple of zipties on it just to be sure :)

and then if all goes well without the zipties and duck tape, I ma tell everyone that you really dont need the dang metal plate thing lol :) for the xp-90 NON copper at least :)
 
Shoot, you shouldn't even have to do any of that stuff. I think it'll be fine just like it is, especially if you have a plastic backplate already. I have just the P4 retention thing with 4 holes and pegs, so I'm sure it's no more sturdy than yours.

nvm I swap the fan ot for a 120mm evercool one with 79 cfm with 30dba and I ma mod the 120m on the xp 90 hehe
 
aZn_pLyR let me know how the hyper6 works for you. I am in the same boat as you as far as i have a gigabyte board. And i too, am trying to figure out if i want the hyper6 or the xp-90 both from svc. I may consider the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 also, but probably not as good for OCing as the first two.

Did you find anywhere to get the metal strap for cheap shipped? I know its 3 bucks, but if you have to pay shipping it just adds up.

I'm a little afraid of the weight of the hyper6, and I read some reviews about the installation being a pain. When you get it please post to this thread with your exsperences with it. Hard to pass up a a heatsink that competes with the 50 dollars ones thats selling for 27 bucks. But they discontinued it i think, so they may have done that for a reason.
 
well if you can wait, the hyper 6+ which is light and with an adnormal 100cm fan will come out, which will probably cool better than teh hyper 6 b/c of the bigger fan.

anyways, I got very afraid of the hyper 6 weight, even though it will probably be fine, but I am a wuss, so I went to JAB-TECH.com and they are great according the to very high rating @ reseller's..and I am grabbing the backplate for the gigabyte board which is 3 bucks, and only if you buy it alone it adds up, but if you buy the plate w/ the xp-90 and a fan or w/e, the shipping is very light :) ufortunately jab-tech.com has the coolermaster for 40ish bucks :( but the only reason I am ordering from JAB-TECH.com is b/c they have stock on the gigabyte backplate replacement for the xp-90 :)
 
I'm running the XP-120 and it's bigger/heavier and it gives me no problems...no reason you can't get the XP-90. ;)
 
According to that review posted above, the XP-120 is only .02 lbs heavier than the XP-90, so I doubt you would have problems either way.
 
BTW, I have my XP90C connected to the plastic back plate that came with the board, and it's working fine. It's not so heavy that it'll bend the plastic and the motherboard. Maybe if you're transporting your case over speed bumps at 40 miles an hour...

well, I wouldve threw the hyper 6 on the plsatic backplate on my gigabyte one, but gigabyte uses plastic+the pinch plastic way to remove the backplate, so no screws. Either way I am gonna have to get a new plate anyways :)
 
woot I changed my mind...AGAIN :) I am gonna go with the 92mm vantec tornado, but i can't afford a dang fan controller so I am just gonna 7v mod it :)

I was practicing with my silent boost crappy fan and all went well...only the first time when I didnt know how to remove the molexes :) now it's all easy eheh.

bought this the first time around. AMAZING :D

That install is exactly why I got the XP90C. They cool very similarly, and the 90 fits a hell of a lot more easily. I gotta admit, though, a 120mm fan on the CPU is pretty sweet... you get a lot more airflow with less noise. I would have had to do something like what you did, though, plus it would interfere with one of my SLI slots, and we just can't have that (not that I'm using SLI.. but I want to be able to later) :)

So far so good, I was thinking of the XP90, but with the Prescott's running
hot tobegin with. I was looking at over kill with the cooling :D
