Thermal Throtlling

Thermal Throttleing I understand what it does. The question is should it be disabled?
 
Personally I like this, makes your idle temperatures alot lower, but if you want it full swing all the time with higher idle temps sure.

Thorttling could also increase the life of the CPU, but they last long enough that you don't need more life out of it.
 
that perhaps is one version of it, another version of it is when the cpu or gpu slows itself down to keep it from melting(lil exagerated, but gets point across)

well, something has already gone pretty wrong if it's slowing down for that reason.

i turn mine off.

if you have confidence that your cooling solution is solid, and you want a bit more performance, then i would suggest turning yours off as well.

on a side note: throttling would have done noting to help me avoid my own meltdown, since the computer itself was turned off already.
 
you heated your computer up until it melted tho normaly people dont run peltiers on a separate power supply thats not linked to the main power supply would be nice if i could turn mine off, the cpu i dun care about.. onyl happens at 80C but my video cards core appears to use throttling as a attempt to prevent overclocking(throttles at even a hair past 500 core :rolleyes: )

believe me, those peltiers are now set up such that they cannot be on, when the computer is off.
 
some hose, plastic retention plate for my block (just made a new one), CPU, motherboard, CPU peltier.

RAM, vid card, HDDs, PSU, pump, rad, everything else was A-okay.
 
I've got a DFI LP 875P-T LGA775 board... and it seems that there is no way to turn off thermal throttling. :(
my options are: 25%, 50%, 75% no off.
my IC7 allowed me to turn it off... and everything went to very stable after turning it off.

any secret menus in the DFI boards? I'm running latest bios n' all.
 
people who use intel would be better equiped than i to answer this, but if there is an option to set the "delay prior to thermal" field to infinity that would do it.

advanced bios features -> CPU feature -> delay prior to thermal.

however, this is so different from AMD that i don't know if this is something that will help performance at all.

i got that out of the .pdf of the manual that DFI has on their website, just by the by.
 
So would I gain any performance by turning it off? I just hooked up my watercooling system and am now at 3.5 GHz off my 2.8C, I am going to leave it here for awhile to burn in the AS5, but does thermal throttling take away from cpu operation if it isn't too hot? I thought it only throttled when too hot.

thats correct.

throttling only happens when the chip gets too hot.

like me for instance, my 3.0E @ 3.9Ghz runs hot and I mean very hot.

it starts to throttle somewhere in the 76C-ish area. now thats HOT! :D
 
I have an AMD system, but as far as my board is concerned throttling only happens when the system is in a standby state.
Throttling on my board reduces the clock speed of the cpu and drops the voltage until you wake the system up.
IE, 87.5% throttling when the system is in standby means my cpu is running @ 12.5% of normal voltage, at a significantly reduced frequency.

Higher throttling values mean it takes longer for the cpu to 'wake up' when coming out of standby. This has nothing to do with idle cycles when the computer is on.

Idle cycles on my board are taken with the 'CPU disconnect' feature in bios that allows the cpu to run S1 cycles without the system in standby.

Again, this is an AMD system, YMMV on an intel setup.
