Thermal Probe placement?

i just got a new case that comes with several thermal probes for temperature readings. I believe there are three - CPU, HD, Case. Where are the best places to put these, especially considering the CPU? Do you just tape them down to make them stay?

Thanks!

At least for the CPU probe, if you can tape it to the underside of your processor, it should read just about perfectly. If you're running an AMD processor, that would be kind hard though. I have my thermistor taped to the underside of my P4, even though every forum I read said that the ThermalTake thermistor wouldn't fit. As for the case probe, I had mine taped to the underside of the crossbrace in my case. Far enough away from hot components that it wouldn't pick up the heat from them.

the underside of the processor? how would that work given the pins all around the bottom? or is that what you were referring to meaning that it would be hard?

im assuming you cant place it directly on the chip core, right? what about under the heatsink but not on the core? i dont need super specific readings, just a good readout.

the underside is pretty advanced and considering you likely already have a sensor "in die" and another "in socket", Id say attaching it as close the the contact interface with the CPU on the heatsink would be the best place

illustrates the pin issue but isnt a sensor

I use my thermal sensors in various locations, and allows me to "map" the thermal characteristics of the case, so experiment a bit first, might find a hotspot that a duct or deflector could cure (or another fan) before you settle on a permenant case temp location

thanks for the suggestion. im not trying to get super accurate readings anyways... a new case i got has thermal probes integrated into the case, and display them through a little built in LCD screen in the front bezel so i figured that while they were there, might as well hook them up and make use of them. just wasnt sure where a good place on the CPU etc was to slap it on there.

like my digital doc 5

Id use em to "map" for awhile
might be alot more valuable in the long run to attach to say your GPU or northbridge
the CPU is pretty well monitored by the CPU itself and the mobo, as is at least one spot on the mobo which will have a SYS temp (youll need to look closely to find that sensor)

you can use the BIOS or Motherboard Monitor (or other 3rd party aps) to display those onscreen

mobo is onboard vid, so no real reason to map it, but i figure why not ;) so ill prob stick one there too, instead of the HD probably. thanks.

re: "map"

I meant move the sensors around for a few weeks
so you can build a profile of where the temperature gradients are in the case
you might find a hotspot under a card or behind a drive, that with an adjustment to a fan location, a duct or deflector could be dealt with

the OEM manufacturers employ Computational Fluid Dyanamics Software (CFD)
to model their computers thermal solution

we get trial and error :p

well most people will place it on the spindle motor cap
if that is exposed
