which is better for a X2 4400 for overclocking( a little bit) with air.(ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU) the Arctic silver 5 or the AS ceramique? im ordering as we type, so hook me up with your opinions! i will be overcloking it .2 ghz to 4800 speed.
 
um, thermal paste really doesn't matter, just install it correctly, either of those will do fine.
 
If the stock HSF for your 4400 is anything like the 4800+ you may not need any other HSF to get 200mhz. Using the stock 4800 HSF, with stock thermal contact patch, I easily clocked to 2.6ghz. Temps didn't pass 55c under load (two copies of Prime95). I have some AS3 but don't see the need to apply it.

thanks for that post. sounds like the stock hsf can get a little noisy on high speed. my buddy has a zalman on his FX-53 and it is hella quiet while keeping his stuff really cool. not too crazy about removing the back plate to mount it, but hey, no pain no gain. he said it wasn't a big deal anyhow. ill let ya know the temps once its installed and running!
 
Yes the stock fan can get quite noisy when Q-Fan kicks it to max, 5400rpm. Durning normal running, 3300rpm, it's very quiet. Subjectively I say it matches my Zalman 7000A-Cu. Although I don't think it cools as well.

The backplate shipped with your 7700, is it cardboard or something else?

7700Cu cooler is wicked (I've got one and am biased!, had the 7000Cu on my last cpu/MB combo which I passed on to family). 7000 was great, 7700 is better and also cools more gear around it like the GPU and Mem modules etc.

Comes with the standerd Zalman plastic backplate and is hefty. Just use a hair dryer on the stock backplate to warm it up a little and then push the studs from the top (one side at a time) and the stock place should come off quite easy.

Then just fit the Zalman plate on and use a couple of the paper washers between the screw studs and the top of the MB when you tighten it up.

Don't use alot of AS, just a blob around the size of a grain of rice (RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THE CPU HEAT SPREADER) and try and place the 7700 on in one motion without moving it around to position. Line up the screw clips and lower it nicely and screw it up tight.

Run mine at 1100RPM and (Not using Cool and Quiet) and I've got a Venice 3000 @ 2.7 with temps ranging from normal 29C up to about 38C after couple of hours gaming.

You'll love it.

Those are impressive temps, MellowDude. I might have to pick me up one. So you say the backplate is plastic? My 7000A-Cu backplate was metal with cardboard.

Tonight I decided to apply AS3. Since it's night and ambient temp here is quite low tonight I won't know if there's much change till tomorrow. My guess is there will not be any or at most 1c.

Have a read of the review, you'll see the backplate halfway down the review (Black rectangular plastic shown under manual in photo).

It's funny that yours was metal, how long ago did you get it? My 7000 was only a few months old and had the same plastic backing plate as the 7700. I aquired (legally) a PCIE graphics card and needed a new MB to take it so I gave my MSI Neo2 Platinum MB, Winchester 3000+ and Zalman to a family member and got a Venice 3000+, MSI K8N SLi Platinum (Has the Creative Live Onbard Sound) and the 7700. It's very quiet and worth the upgrade. Didn't want to keep the 7000 as I wanted to try and keep the system I gave away as quiet as I could aswell. Stock coolers are noisy compared to these Zalmans.

Make sure your MB's can handle it though, it's big! -
