i just bought a new water cooling system to throw in my comp and i'm gonna install it this weekend.. i was just wondering how to *safely* remove the thermal paste thats on my processor(sig) right now so i can put the stuff that came with my watercooling set on.

You need to use alcohol, if i remember correctly isopropyl alcohol should be just fine. Just don't use somehting like nail polish remover or anything else with cosmetic additives because that will damage or convolute your heatspreader with unecessary chemicals.

so just apply the alcohol to a cloth or kleenex or something then rub it off?

IPA (isopropal alcohol) and a soft cloth work just fine. IPA is safe for just about any circuit board I've ever worked on.

WD40 works, and so does turning a can of compressed air upside down.
It will get the TIM off, but WD40 or any petrochemical based cleaner will get into the interface and impede thermal transfer. AS's web page discusses this; made sense to me.

You can buy small cans of very pure IPA at places like Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. in the paint section.

one more question... i went to the store today and got some 70% stuff.. is 70% pure enough or should i do some more hunting and find something more pure?

I'd buy thermal paste if I were you.

My method is taking Isopropyl alcohol, put it on some a Paper towel (I wouldn'r recommend Kleenex, rips to easily) Then gently rub the Thermal paste off.
