thermal paste installation question

I have a question reguarding installing thermal paste on the processor. I have been informed by people telling me to apply the paste and mount the heatsink on the motherboard on the processor, and then take it out and wipe off the excess thermal paste.
I personally think its a pain to install and uninstall the heatsink and then put it back in, so can i just push the heatsink on the processor for a second or two and take it out without having to fiddle with the installation clips?

Put a dab on the processor. Take the blade.

Smooth the paste across the silver part.

Remove excess around the silver, with cue tips.

Mount the processor heat thingy...

my 2 cents
