Let's say the thermal paste is all over the core, on some surrounding ceramic, and very much close to if not touching many of the little metal leads/things (AMD Athlon XP 2500+). How much do I need to concern myself with thermal paste on the metal parts? The little bridges..I really don't know what they are called. Can I clean those parts? Is this bad for a CPU? Was I drunk when I applied the paste?

you applied too much, next time apply just a small rice grain in the middle of the core or apply a small thin layer (spread with a old credit card).

just remove it with isospryrl (i dont know how to spell it) alcohol
