Thermal pads

Ok. Quick question.

Is it bad to remove thermal pads from devices that come with them?
For ex:

My KN8 SLI came with them and I took it off and put thermal paste on the heatpipe thingy instead. I also see the AC coolong for video cards come with pads as well. Is it wise not to use them and put paste instead?

I was planning on buying an AC for a 7800gt but was thinking of using AS Ceramique instead of the pads...

Anyone any knowledge?

As long as you put thermal paste on, and properly mount the heatsinks, it'll probably temps 1-2C, so no, not a bad thing at all.
