thermal pads + as5 = dangerous ?

Hi hardocpers,

I notice that on my video card that the memory modules have a thermal pad interface to transfer the heat to the large heatsink. The thing is that some of the thermal pads are not completely touching my memory modules (i.e. you can see tiny-small air gaps). Would it be harmfull to fill these gaps with some thermal conductive counpound (i.e. arctic silver 5)? I mean will the paraffin in the thermal pads be dangerous if it is mixed with some arctic silver 5?

Just get rid of the thermal pads all together and use some AS5 if you have enough.

ryuji and YmkFX: no can do. the pads is the only thing that will make the ram and the heasink in contact. without the pads, there would be a huge 2mm gap! see pic, the white stuff is the pads

whip out the grinder and grind that core area down! :p then spend about 4 hours lapping it to mirror finish for pwnage

j/k just let it be... it works fine, why mess with it? or does it not?

I know, I know, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" . But i think i can squeeze a few more Mhz in memory overclock if the ramsinks have a better contact with the pads...

So does anybody knows if it is safe to mix paraffin (thermal pads) with as5? (i know that paraffin is used in some rocket fuel...)

maybe i should buy thicker thermal pads and replace the old ones ? it seems to be the cheapest most obvious solution...

well what card is it, if its ddr1 you prob wont get much of anything out of it unless you got odd memory like my fx5900 NU had, theoretically youd be lucky to get 900 mhz i got 1000 mhz

shoot and i just dremeled custom ramsinks for it...

anyhow its the cheap asus x800xl...

no reason not to give it a try volt mods always make more cooling worth it :p wish i knew what my fx would do with volt mods, didnt survive ups tho
