Hello! I got some cooler master thermal compound stuff. The problem is that its for ZIF sockets. It tells you to put the thermal compound on the side of the cpu and spread it across with this credit card thing.

Will it work by putting a little grease on the center, and putting the HSF on? Also, I think my brother who was trying to "help" me, may have scratched the heatsink when removing the compound (he's an idiot).

Thank you

So, does anyone know if that compound would work by just placing a little on the center of the CPU, putting the HSF on, and slightly rotating the HSF? Also, will touching the heatsink ruin it?

spreading the thermal paste manually is fine, it's just that the idea is to get it as thin as physically possible, and it's generally difficult (at least for my wobbly hands) to get it so thin. Thats the reason people use the 'tiny dot in the middle' because it does the job for you.

my advice would be to try it, and see how it goes. as long as you use a small amount either way, it'll be fine.

As for touching the heatsink, it won't ruin it at all. I would however recommend cleaning it with some rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth (eye-glasses cloth is one example), just like I assume you're doing to prep the processor.
