I was wondering if there is something basic i could use as thermal compound for a few days till my good stuff arrives. Ive seen that toothpaste works pretty well but dries out after a few hours of use. looking for something i can pick up at a hardware store or something like that.

As far as thermal pastes What one is the best out there? Ive used Arctic Silver Ceramique and for some reason it took a ton of it to work. I applied a dot ont he cpu and after spread out it was about the size of a dime. fired the computer up and it wanted to run over 230 degrees F. the more ceramique i put to it the more it cooled down. Is there anything out there that works better? was i doing something wrong?

Also can someone fill me in on lapping and if it will help in my situation and how to do it.

The processor at hand is a Pentium 4 3.0GHz Prescott with a Stock Intel HSF.

Please help.

just wait until your new tim shows up. a couple days isn't the end of the world.

Arctic Silver, Ceramique and the newly found Zalman stuff are all great choices. I picked up a bottle of the Zalman, and it dropped my ceramique temps by 2'c
