i bought a used q9450 off of someone on the forums here.. I installed it and it worked fine for a few days, but then I started getting lockups, etc. Pretty soon the computer would not boot even at stock settings, so I put my old e6600 and everything works fine.

the problem is that im out $250 now. if i tried to tell the guy it was broken, he probably would just say it was my fault. im also guessing these chips don't come with warranties?

If you used paypal, you might be able to get money back. I would also wait to see if he responds. If he doesn't, then definitely post his name to the TTT forum.

That sounds to me like you were OCing? If so, that's what you get.

*sigh* the thing is I opened a dispute because he didn't ship it for a few weeks, but I closed it when it got here. So I don't think paypal would be very helpful now. Anyhow I don't know why paypal would believe that it was bad. anyone can say that to just get the money back.

I'm pretty sure that if I asked he'd just say it was fine when he had it.

And yea, I oc'd it, but it was a modest OC and temperatures were fine. In his original post he even said he had it overclocked as well, and I didn't go as high as he did. If the chip was unstable at OC, I understand, but at absolute clock speeds with fine temperatures it should be stable.

is there any way I can get a replacement from Intel? Not like they can tell it was overclocked.

Since you're not the original purchaser and don't have the original receipt I doubt it. Was it a boxed processor?

yes, it was boxed. I don't have the original receipt but I have a paypal receipt which states it was for the q9450. If that doesn't work maybe I can get him to mail me the original.

I have the stock heatsink as well.

What MB do you have?
Is chipset rated for that Quadcore?
If so, have you updated to the latest bios?

You still might try changing bios.
If u are using 0403 or 0401 beta versions then go back to 0308.
If u are already at 0308 then try a beta.

Sometimes the changes that they make don't agree with all processors and going back to an earlier version will correct it untill a newer more stable bios comes out.

Just a suggestion- it does sound like the CPU but I like to try all possibilities.

Oh, and by the way- you have great taste in motherboards..

I don't think changing bios is going to help here -_-

I just hope intel will fix or replace this or I'm going to be a sad panda

He bought the CPU from newegg originally so he's going to send me a copy of the invoice. I'll call intel on monday to set up the RMA.

weird how a chip could be working one minute and crap out the next.

It looks like you lucked out. I was beginning to worry for you until the words: NewEgg, invoice, Intel and RMA.:D

yea, it passed the 30 days to return it to newegg but it's still covered by intel for 3 years.

do they fix these things or just give you a new one?

I had board that would run a dual just fine, but a quad would cause random lock ups.....quads put a lot more stress on the boards....not saying your board is bad, but its not out of the question....I have never once seen a bad CPU act that way... ...they usually either work or they don't.

Hey, from what I gather on the net they do send new ones on occasion. I've never had a bad Intel CPU....yet, knock on wood!

well the guy I bought the board from was running a quad fine... I think it was a q9650. I don't have a way to test just the CPU though because my other board doesn't support 45nm's

alright, I got a copy of the invoice from him. Will intel accept the RMA even though the invoice from newegg isn't in my name?
