Theory on CS FPS Drops

okay, my mother bought me a nice computer for my bday last year, and it was an ECS prebuilt deal, with XP Home installed on it. it also came with an "XP Home" CD but it was branded by ECS and didnt even mention the fact that it was Windows XP, just said it was a "system recovery disc"

now, i put in a 9700pro, and got the fps drops despite trying everything.

later, put in a new mobo as well, a7n8x, and a new processor. however i had misplaced my "system recovery disc" so i used my brothers Windows XP CD that had the microsoft business on there and the holographic text that said "windows xp" and all the sudden i didnt get fps drops anymore.

however, just a few days ago i reformatted and installed using the system recovery cd that i also recently found.

now i get the fps drops again....

my friend said that its possible i got a bad windows install and that got me thinking. is it possible that some windows xp cd's are installing versions of XP that dont work with cs very well? and some that install xp and have cs run great?

tell me if your getting the drops and what kind of cd you used :)

Sorry but I don't think the problem is related to the disc you used to install the OS.

maybe the recovery disc is installing old drivers for your video card. Did you update them after you finished installing windows?

Sigh.

This has been a problem for almost TWO years now.

It is due to issues with the HL engine and ATi cards. There is NO solution that we have found yet, although n_patch and fps_max CAN help.

This is something that comes around every 4 months or so, and we STILL don't have a fix for it.

Drop it, and let it be. It's an old game, they have no plans on fixing it. It either works, or doesn't, depending on the alignment of the stars. You just have to live with it...

And don't make threads about it anymore, please, we've ALL tried to fix it, and can't.

It's a modified Q1 engine. Just because its old doesn't mean they shouldn't make it work correctly. Oh yea, and the fact that it is BY FAR the most popular multiplayer game ever and currently is another pretty damn good reason to make it work right.

Edit: Everquest and Lineage are probably more popular so it's the most popular non-mmorpg multiplayer game.

it's not a question of if they should or shouldn't, but if it's worth their time and if they can. The problem lies in the way the engine is coded for OGL/D3d, it never liked ATi.

im trying to help find a reason, not a fix :)

tonight sometime i should be reformatting and using an actual xp disc instead of the ECS one i had. im putting money on getting good results.

Reason: the engine isn't coded for that card. It's coded for Nvidia and 3dfx. The result: obfusicated code that doesn't run well on ATi cards. What to do: Ignore it! Go on with life!

ignoring it isn't a very good solution.. that's like my situation with jolting in my gaming every 30 seconds. saying oh yea just forget about it and live with it. Wrong...

As for fixing your problem. I would say turn off truform and all ati_npatch and ati_subdiv and any other ati commands for counter-strike. I had the same problem with an 8500 LE but for some reason I'm not having any problem with my 9800 pro ( thank the jebus ) Good luck and get back to us if you're still having problems.

i wonder why only some ppl are having this problem. the other day i played cs at a friends house (9700np) it was running at 150+fps. this is with AA and AF on.

If you had the problem for 2 years, and the best minds in the industry can't solve it, then it's almost certain that we won't either...

:p

We've all given up. Reinstalling / fiddling can generally get it going well. If not, well...

And considering that both the Q1 and Q2 engines are fully open sourced - I don't see the problem here.

if the system you bought "bundled" had a nvidia card...then you pop in the rescue cd or whatever and install all drivers you are installing nvidia videodrivers...old mobo drivers etc (you said you installed a new mobo. then you install your 9700pro ontop of the det drivers...get my drift?

The problem with Counter Strike is that Valve code completly sucks cock. There is no good explanation whatsoever why anyone with a GF2 or above should not have 100FPS in CS constantly. My 9800 Pro is just now seeing consistant 100FPS in CS with the last update to CS. It's really sad when I used to get the same FPS in BF1942 then I did in CS.

No, the code was fine, for the video cards of the time. They had no way of predicting what would happen in the FIVE years since the release of the game, so they COULDN'T code for new hardware  What did you all expect? Them to predict the future? It's an old engine, in an OLD game, coded for OLD hardware. You don't expect the old Glide games to work that great on current hardware (notwithstanding the fact that we don't HAVE glide anymore), so why do you expect an engine coded for Nvidia and 3dFX to work well on ATi???
