I have a couple of theoretical questions about gaming performance.

Games now are made for 32bit and single core and give a performance of xxx

soon games will be 64bit/multithreaded and some people will still be playing on single cores so will the performance be 2 times xxx

soon after games will be 64bit/multithreaded and people will be playing on duel cores so will the performance be 4 times xxx

I assume that I have something wrong in my logic so could someone tell me what there new technologies will bring us

No. Multi-threading has overhead because you need to synchronize things between threads if they're going to work on the same thing, IE if they will need to read/write to some of the same variables. If you don't need to read/write the same stuff, then chances are the threads will be working on completely different stuff, IE one on video, one on sound, or maybe split up video/audio/AI, or whatever. In this case, the threads won't be balanced as to the amount of work that they do.

You never see a 2x increase with dual CPUs.

And 64-bit will give bigger registers so math will go faster if the registers are utilized, but it won't speed up reads/writes on memory, which takes up a lot more time than what the CPU is doing anyway.

If you multithread on a single core, it doesn't help performance (unless you've got something like hyperthreading), it just makes it easier to "do multiple things at once." I have that quoted because the program won't really be doing multiple things at once, but it will be using the scheduler of the OS to split CPU time.

64-bit and dual core are both things to look forward to, but they won't double performance.

So for gaming neither 64bit/multithreaded programming or duel cores will help the performance.

Then for gamers what is the point of moving to either of those.

Look at some benchmarks. Currently 64 bit offers roughly 10% performance increase in a Native 64Bit OS and Native 64 bit apps.

Dual Core offers performance increases all depending on the App. If it is single threaded, Multi threaded, heavly multi threaded... it all depends.

Isn't there a law of dimishing returns stating that when you double something, the performance is a maximum 85% improvement?

It depends.

You obviously have the video card that can also bottleneck you. However, re-read dandragonrage and USMC2Hard4U's posts, the answers are there...

You will never see a 2x increase, but if everything is -perfect- (impossible) you will get pretty close.

Wouldn't it be true to say that certain cooling factors could come into play as well? Not to mention the possiblity of a slight overclocking to teh FSB of the motherboard, RAM, GPU to get rid of these bottlenecks?

I'm not talking about going for the fastest / highest OC, but rather, small bumps here and there to see if that bottleneck can be taken out.

Think of a bottleneck as a brick wall and each time you overclock, you might remove a layer of bricks from the wall.... But it's still a brick wall.

Point taken...
