Ok so I'm looking to add a game to my gaming library and I'm debating on picking up a copy of The Witcher or not. I just downloaded and played through a little bit of the demo. I honestly wasn't too impressed. I was just really confused about the combat and where to place skill points.

Does the game get better with a retail version? Is this game worth picking up?

Opinions are appreciated.

Thanks!

If you even remotely like the demo..GO BUY THE GAME!!..Its awesome and the demo doesnt really do it justice..

It takes some getting used too. You can concentrate on different areas... But I recommend the first time that you concentrate on speed and power of yourself and weapons. I like it, but have yet finished my scenerio yet. It was worth it. (Oblivion was ok too, but these two are similar and different enough not to overshadow each other). The story has multiple scenerios, and hours of submersion should see you through most things. Good Luck.

I really enjoyed this game after a few friends started playing it and telling me I should give it a go. Storyline is great and the game really brings your attention to it. I am a fps guy, but this game really makes you want to put some time into it :)

I got the feeling from playing the demo that the retail version of this game was very immersive and could easily see why people like it.

The demo makes me what to get the game to see how the storyline plays out and to me that's a rarity in the gaming world.

The retail version is very immersive, IMO. I felt like I was playing through a good movie, as cheesy as that might sound, LOL. The storyline, characters, music, overall atmosphere etc. totally drew me in to a level that I haven't experienced with a game in a long time. Now, I realize everyone is different, but for me, I found it hard bring myself to leave the game in order to tend to all that annoying real life stuff.... :D

It's a good game-- I like it a lot. The whole adult-oriented atmosphere is refreshing, imo.

I really love the game...but it's plagued by bugs! especially CTD bugs making it generally unplayable. I'd hold off until the release the "extreme" unedited version. They're adding new voice acting and just generally increasing the length of the story line. Hopefully they'll fix up all the bugs when this new version comes out too. I believe it's coming out sometime in the summer. This version is not only available to those who buy the new edition. There is also going to be a patch for the people who bought the old version. So it'd be equally fine to buy the old one. Just look for deals from not til summer IMO.

Some good comments here. Thanks for the replies all. I'm going to pick it up next this weekend. I've been looking for a new RPG for some time now.

The Witcher along with Stalker and The Orange Box were the standout games of last year.

The Witcher itself is a brilliant game - immersive, detailed and compelling. You owe it to yourself to buy a copy. I'm going to play it again once the enhanced version comes out

The poker dice mini game itself is better than most games released last year!

The poker game is pretty fun! I like to play Thaler and rob of his money and then he goes into cussing spirts.

I alwayts save my game before I play the poker games. so if I lose I reload it and play again, lolz.

I traded the game away for something else. The dialogue was TERRIBLE and the load times sucked. I heard there was a patch to improve them but the game just wasn't my cup of tea. And the Female char in the game's breasts were set FAR TOO LOW on her chest!!! It drove me nuts, it was like watching a train reck!

You can buy some as soon as you enter Act 2 provided you have the cash, either from the Order or the dwarves at their respective armouries.

I loved the demo, but I haven't bought the game yet. At this point I'm just going to wait it out until the Enhanced Edition comes out.

I thought it was awesome. The game engine is very demanding. It had some trouble in a few spots on my computer (at 1920x1200), but for the most part it was fine. The controls do take some getting used to. At first I was trying to play it like Diablo, clicking as fast as possible. This does not work at all, and will get you killed pretty quick. You gotta slow down a bit and make the combo moves, and you will have a much better time.

I also liked the story, and the atmosphere as well. My only gripe with the game (other than the bugs, which are mostly solved by the patch) was the lack of NPC models. It seems like there are like 10 character models total, so you see the same people everywhere. Apparently this is gonna be fixed in the enhanced edition, so I can't wait for that.

Ya, I think I already purchased the latest and greatest. Bleh. I want some knight armor!!

Not to rain on your parade, but there is only one other set of armor after that, but it doesn't cost anything. You have to do a long quest chain to get the armor I am talking about, but its worth it.

That's the only thing I don't like about this game. Not enough weapons or armor. I want a flaming sword!!!!

I agree. With any new weapons you pretty much dont' have any room to even bring the weapons back to sell from all the guys that you kill in the game. I could make a lot more money. I remember playing dungeon siege. You could buy a donkey to carry all of your goods if you ran out of room. Kill a bunch of people and grab all the weapons and sell them in the next town.

I liked the fact that magical, powerful items such as swords and armour were hard to find. It made it more rewarding when you did find the items.

You'll have a bit of a wait. It's apparently been pushed back to Aug/Sep.

*sigh* I stopped playing back in Feb when they announced the EE.

Where do I get better armor? hahaha

Teoretically you can get it in Act III but you won't have enough cash till much later :D

You must forget your typicall RPG attitude of new armor/weapon every 5 minutes there. And you should be happy there'a any armor at all there as Witcher is mutant designed to fight monsters he rellies on ultra-fast reflexes as a protection instead of heavy steel - no amount of armor is going to protect you against dragon fangs etc.

I seriously suggest not waiting for EE - they promised all game changes in there will be available as free downloads for current users anyway. And once you get those in September you can play it again doing diffrent choices :)

10k cash huge gambler ? :) Becouse IIRC that's what second armor costs.
Altrough i guess you could get that much with gambling and enough patience.

Nice, I made about 15k from gambling and spent most of it on weapons, armour, books and rare items. Playing De Wett was the best for high stakes poker dice. It's possible to make 1k from a single hand.

Yeah, I always save my game before I play. If I lose, I just reload my game. If I win, obviously I keep playing.
