My old computer was a Socket A at 2.2GHz with 1GB of Mushkin low latency RAM. This e6300 that I bought crushes the Socket A in almost everything...the only thing I don't notice a huge difference in is during something really hard drive intensive. Windows is snappier, my projects render several times faster. I haven't had the chance to rip a CD, but I'm sure that's faster as well. I will still hang on to my old Socket A for awhile...it is rock stable and I may turn it into a secondary music making machine, I don't know. I thought about selling it, but I don't really need the money and it would be a pain to ship. I also feel attached to it because at the time all the parts were top of the line....it just can't hang with what I have now.
I am saying this even though I got a relatively poor overclocking e6300....I seem to be stuck at 2.8 no matter what I do. ANything higher will eventually fail....I can go higher than 800FSB and pass memory tests, but Prime95 tells the real story...usually ends up with my computer hard locking at anything over 2.8GHz. I tried 500 x 6, but it wouldn't work. I'm probably pushing my 667 memory too high. I bought it because it was under $200. I haven't spent more than $200 for a computer part (except monitors) since I bought a Voodoo2 for $299 a long time ago.
I will do a bunch of benchmarks on my Socket A and then on my e6300 to see just how much faster this thing is and I will report back here. Would anyone be interested in this??I can't be the only one who went from Socket A to Conroe. I skipped A64 and P4 entirely. I honestly didn't see a compelling reason to upgrade. For day to day stuff the Socket A will still work fine, you'll just be waiting awhile for it to finish.
One example of this is the music making program Reaper. I can render a project on my socket A and it renders at 2.1x realtime. My e6300 will render the same project at 7.6x. THis is less time for me to wait if I'm rendering a whole album for mastering for a band.
