I know I'm not the only one in the world, but oh my God, my 155 dollar 320GB drive just failed.

There goes all my flacs.....countless hours of EAC rippings and perfectly encoded 20 gigs

I think its still under warranty, I bought it 7/7/05 from monarch, but oh my God!! Seriously,I just turned on my computer (worked FINE last night) hear a fucking clicking noise and my drive is like not detected. IT WAS IN LIKE PERFECT CONDITION, A 155 DOLLAR HDD AND IT JUST CRASHES!!!

All the while, I have been worrying my raptor would crash

Seriously, I would rather have my main drive fail than my storage. i'm feeling soar

What the hell, omg...... :mad: :mad:
 
Sorry to hear about your losses. A data recovery company can probably get it back for a few hundred dollars. And buying a backup solution now will allow you to avoid this in the future.

Is there any feesible possible way of extracting anything off of it by myself? Do I need some kind of machine....before I send this bitch back to WD?
 
I noticed you didn't list your power supply in your sig. That could well be the problem. What is it?

If you can get it to recognize it, you may be able to get some data off it. If not, it's gonna be the whole clean-room thing, and that you can't do at home.

Antec neopower 480....shouldn't be a problem

Man, I hate being inexperienced...on the first click it wouldn't be recognized, so I was like "what the hell"? Pretty much kept my cool, thought a good old restart would fix the problem. After the second clicking on restart, I knew it was a hardware problem, but actually saw the drive contents this time (my partitions). IF I ONLY KNEW....I should have grabbed the data then... :(

Its sitting in the freezer right now (lol, the lady said, well technically you shouldn't because if we knew it would void the warranty, but hdd's crashings sucks and you should try it anyway, just don't tell us) wish me luck....

How much is your data worth to you? I would recomend drive savers to get the data back but it will cost you a pretty penny. Figure near a grand. You can always call them for a quote. Also some places have discount codes you can use to get a few bucks off. I know compusa does and I think someone told me micro center does although I'm not sure about that. The cool thing about drive savers is when you get the drive back from them it will be resealed with there stickers on it. WD should still warranty the drive even after ds opens it up. Pretty much all the major hd mfgs and oems will warranty a drive if ds works in it to get data.
 
I've sucessfully done the freezer trick on an older drive (10gb), and also seen the "lightly tapping it" trick performed. Worth a shot if you don't think you'd actually send it for recovery.
 
Naw, my data isn't worth thousands of dollars, everything is replacable except for the pictures. I am praying this freezer trick will work..............

What is the tapping trick?
 
This is why I refuse to put important data on 1 drive. My backups consist of a 200gig seagate external, a 120gig WD external thats tucked away in a drawer, and for my live storage/usage a 360gig raid 5 array.

RAID is your friend..............(most of the time) :)
 
It was funny, because I thought to myself...it will take me a real life lesson to ever listen to these pshycotic backup punks

i'll probably become one of them now because of this....

That really sucks :(

The same thing pretty much happened to me. I had 3 drives fail on me in the span of about 3 months. Just about nothing was backed up. I was able to recover most of it myself, but still losing data is bad.

I broke down and bought 2 new drives, both 300GBs. I also got them Vantech EZ-Swap containers for both of those and also my Raptor. That way if heat was the problem, it ain't happenning again. I put my OS and installed apps on the Raptor. I put all important data / CD rips and everyting else you can imagine on one of the 300 giggers. The other 300GB is used to backup the main drive. I don't run RAID as I've ran into problems before and don't want to throw money at it right now (funny how throwing money at stuff works...)

Anyways, backup, backup, backup. You'll sleep better at night knowing your data is safe.
 
At best I used to backup some stuff to a dvd from time to time, and be lucky if i even kept it. then i spent 2 days sorting documents and photos from the digital camera and realized I needed a real solution. Spent about 180 canadian on it but I don't think I'll look back and regret it, I also realized online backup isnt what i want because a raid array is no protection against a virus, corrupted file table, or an overzealous script of some sort. I'm using an eSATA external enclosure that is turned off except when doing the backup.

I remember when I migrated to windows 2000 when it first came out and I was having problems with it so i went to reinstall it. Well my second harddrive was still fat32 and I forgot the the primary was NTFS, anyways I used my old boot floppy and as soon as it came up i hit format c: and y for yes, that was a very sad day for me. Live and learn.

Learn that since you weren't experiencing data lose due to phyiscal damage and because DOS format is (mostly) non-destructive you could have recovered tons of data?

Dos formats do hardly anything to the drive. EasyRecovery pro on any other File resuce utlity will save your day. I learned the hard way when I formatted the worng drive in a work machine and lost 20 years of property appraisals in one "yes" :D

Got 100% of it back with OnTrack..
 
naw the docs i had backed up on a cd and the music etc was easily replaced. heh it was only a 4gb drive, i knew partial recovery was possible (i didnt know full was) but really all i lost was msn / icq logs. Afterwards i wished i still had the logs but its not like i need them any more. was definately frustrating though. This all happened back when my computer usage was focued arround games and i didnt know much else about their low level operation other than how to assemble the parts and reinstall the software etc. Couldn't really put my finger on it but my intrest definately took a shift at some point.
 
oh wait now i remember i was installing windows 98 not reinstalling 2k, heh so after the format i went on my merry way and installed windows on the freshly formatted drive then when i got in windows i realized i couldnt see my "second" drive
