The unimaginable SSD problem...

Helping my friend with what appears to be a DOA Agility 3 SSD. This is a new drive he received last week and failed to appear in the bios for him. He is using a GA-X58-USB3 board and has already loaded the latest BIOS with no avail with AHCI.

I took the SSD, plugged it into my system via BlacX usb adapter and it popped right up in Windows and I was able to create a partition. Rebooted the machine and the drive stayed there.

I downloaded the linux bootable CD for firmware updates from OCZ and booted to that in which the drive also showed up. The latest firmware is currently on the drive which is 2.22.

This morning I took the SSD, installed it internally into my laptop which originally saw the drive via the BlacX usb adapter and sure enough it does not show in the BIOS.

Any ideas on why this drive will not appear in BIOS but work within Windows

Okay, so we've determined it's an intermittent issue because now it is not showing via usb anymore. He started an RMA process...

Awful drives - i've been through a number of them. OCZ gave them to me as RMA replacements for my faulty Vertex 2's (also awful hence the replacements).

Bottom line is, if it's only a week old, don't RMA it, send it back DOA it and buy a proper SSD (Intel or Samsung imho). There's a reason they're dirt cheap unfortunately.

Seriously - i will never buy OCZ again.

OCZ has their problems like any company. sure if your one of the unlucky ones, you will have a sour taste in your mouth. but after buying 9 OCZ drives, (3x vertex2, 34nm; and 6x Vertex4's) with something like 13,000 collective hours of use, none has failed on me. for the price, you cant beat em. i have a 480GB raid-0 of vertex4s that does 1.7-2.0GB/sec read speed, and it cost under $600. cant do that with intel or samsung.

YMMV considerably.

I have no personal experience with OCZ, so I won't comment on that.

But the drive is still in the return window. Return it if you can.

Yea, I have 2 OCz drives, and one of them has failed twice in less than 6 months. About to start the second RMA process now. Fuck the trash OCZ puts out, I replaced it with an M4 and will sell this drive once the new one arrives.

Ditto on that. I have two Vertex 3's myself in RAID0 and bought a 3rd for my girlfriends laptop and all are flawless. I believe he just got unlucky. He is actually swapping directly with Newegg.

I've got this RAID controller on the way to try and improve speeds over my onboard.
