6800GT to Ultra speeds vs. x800 Pro -> Flashmod -> XT Speeds.

That is the question. I wanted an x800XT (of course) and prefer ATI, but it's coming down to the line in ordering the parts. I have a few options.

6800GT to Ultra speed
x800Pro flashed / XT speeds
OR
Order PC now, get all the parts except the video card and wait until availability.

I'm looking for some guidance here, what would you do?

I think the majority of this section is about this dude.

You could of course read a few articles and decide for yourself though. Probably the best idea. You can weigh the pros and cons better because you know what you play and probably even plan on playing in the near future. This thread is just going to be another fan-bias-boy bitch fest. There are many you can read to save us sane people the grief of another. A better title and I probably wouldn't be in here right now. Not complaining... I just know someone is going to say "If you don't like it, dont post yada yada." Save yourself the trouble though. Read up.

I just blew my wad on a GT. ;) So I guess that means I pick that.

I already know what I would prefer to get. I'm not talking about x800XT vs. Ultra here, that's why this thread is different. I'm curious as to what most people would choose in regards to 6800GT OC'd or x800 Pro OC'd / Flashed. I am more concerned about HL2 than Doom 3, but am not sure how the x800 Pro Flashed / OC performance is compared to the 6800GT's. I've heard results from each, never comparisons.

I agree. Everyone of these threads eventually turns into a battle of who made the better buying decision.
Figure out what you are looking for in a video card (ie. price, performance, IQ, VIVO functionality, etc.), do some research, and go from there. Don't let some nvidiot or fanATIc tell you what is best for you just because he/she thinks they made the smarter decision.

depends on what you want to do with the card... what games do you play, etc

That's all.

it's still a beaten topic as most people are looking to the $400 cards instead of the $500. Ok, ok, if you really want an opinion with no BS nonsense I say go for the GT. It is closer to it's big brother out of the box. Last time I tried to unlock pipes on an ATi card I paid the restocking fee and bought the real deal, which I couldnt afford, because I already had it stuck in my head I wanted a 9700, or a 9500 masquerading as one, at that point. There also seem to be some deals out there a good chunk under MSRP for GT's even with nice recent bundles. Again though, it's really all about the games.

The reason I thought it ws to be avoided is Im sure someone will find issue with what I've said even though I've been careful. Because of course it's so utterly shocking that I'd pick the one possibly binned for MHz as opposed to a core possibly binned for both MHz and pipelines.

oh and um clean slate, I know I've pointed this out before. It is already considered weak to use DDR speak among enthusiasts but for your own sake it's a bit foolish to list your cpu speed as 11*360.

IMO, go for the X800 unless you're just some kind of OGL freak. Most games are D3D, and the X800 is slightly better in D3D.

Opengl freak? What the hell are you talking about? Doom3, call of duty? All of the games that are going to spin off from doom3's engine? Why in the hell would you give up all of the performance gain that you would get in opengl games to get a SLITHER of performance in SOME D3d games? Don't you know that drivers could even put the nvidia cards firmly in the lead in d3d, there is a fat chance in hell that ati will catch up to nvidia in opengl.

Bottom line
d3d = both are even, slight(and I mean so slight that you wouldn't notice it) advantage to ati
opengl= nvidia pounds ati into the ground

you decide which will give you more for your money.

OCing a GT is HELL of alot safer then flashing a card imo

I don't think I've seen an ATI flash go bad......musn't be that bad....nope I have, its the one where th guy overclocked the living shit out of it.....not surprising really

And I truly WISH people would pull their heads out of their asses and pass comment only and I mean ONLY when they see a certain card running a game. If you can tell the difference between the Ultra and XT PE on D3 then your unique.

I'd love to put idenitcal machines (bar gfx cards of course) next to each other and make some of these people saying such shit make a choice on which was the Ultra......I bet the results would be interesting to say the least.....

Take a look at Far Cry.

There's really only a handfull of OPENGL games. Most of the games are directX.

I would get the x800 vivo and flash it. You just can't touch ATI's FSAA or Direct X peformance.

Look GT is going down and down in price while X800 is up there. I wonder why that is? You get what you pay for.

Its going down in price because its available, and nV wants its market share back. Also refreshes from nV are due out soon, don't know if they will just make pci-e parts for the refresh or actually up the clocks on thier cards. But the nv45 (gt version) is at 435mhz on the gpu which is a pci-e version.

Also Far Cry, ATi and nV are equal, just depends on the level.

As is Ut 2004, and many other dx games.

LOL because it's available? Okay x800 been available too. NV already has market share. NV refresh? What about ATI's refresh?

Most benches are similar except Doom 3 which Carmack is an Nvidiot himself because Nvidia basically makes cards for Carmack to program it on.

there is a very good chance ATi's refresh will be delayed, nV already announced thier refresh 1 month back, what about ATI, they are just getting their flag ship card out now?

If you believe that Carmack is an nvidiot, you are a fool, the Doom 3 engine was first showcased on the ATi 9700 well second time around first time it as on a gf 3.

The reason ATi's cards don't preform well is because thier hyper z isn't effecient with the Doom 3 engine's shadow system. Its very apprenent in this game because of the heavy use of shadows. nV has optimizations for shadows, but thats only part of it. Ultrashadow wasn't even activated with the nV drivers yet.

ATI refresh? Now you can tell the future? LOL

Carmack is an nVidiot. ATI Showcase sure. Because nVidia didn't even have a vid card to show case. LOL

As I recall nVidia's been carmack's bitch ever since the TNT days. They still are carmacks's money maker.

Yeah what every, you are fool for thinking that. and ATi is Valve's bitch, look at how your talking are you a premature adolescent?

Okay how am I acting immature? Your the one who's calling names. Calling me a fool or what not?

I tell like how it is. I don't follow by what everybody is going by. I know for a fact Nvidia top end cards get sliced and diced by XT-PE on FSAA and ANiso and direct X games. Only thing Nvidia has over ATI is Doom 3 which isn't enough to take it IMO.

Valve is nobody's bitch. Sure Valve performs little better on ATI cards because it's DirectX.

I wonder who Rancor is? Probably NV's PR?

In your mind only, first off I said you are a fool if you think that, I didn't call you a fool, and you reverbated your orginally statement and then I called you a fool.

You tell it how you want to see it, show me one reviewer that compairs different levels, with aa and af on, that doesn't flip flop in dx games. Also try to find ones with new drivers if you can other then DH. Because nV's aa and af performance has improved, in the last few driver revisions.

And I never stated that the 6800 ultra was faster, they are equal. nV is faster at the texture level with shaders, ATi is faster at geomtery with shaders, hence the difference in performance depending on the level.

If I was a pr guy from nV, I wouldn't state they were equal, maybe you're a pr guy for ATi, since you are stating ATi is faster?

Break it down first and know what your talking about before you type it up since you don't seem to know what you're talking about.

Also read it carefully, I didn't say Valve was Ati's bitch, I said ATi was Valve's bitch.
Just as you stated nV is Carmack's bitch. Can't even remember what ya typed in your own posts I see..

Why don't you point out to us why ATi doesn't better in direct x and show use an anylasis of shader performance for both vertex and pixel shaders?

LOL there's benches all over the place using FSAA and Aniso just search. And stay in subject or your a retard if you can't. LOL

There's no point arguing with nVdia's PR. your an Nvidiot for LIFE.

I'm sorry I'm not an ATI PR. I wish I was though so I can all their stuff for free.

Show them to me, with newer drivers please. Right you can't even comment on 90% of the things here, so whats the use of even trying to construct a integellent conversation with you. You're the only person here calling others nv*****, shouldn't expect anything more from a person like you. Break down dx 9's shader performance on the cards, I want to see where you get your information from.

Why should it??

OH OH OH x% of ppl are buying a GT...I MUST TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Get an identity and do research on the games u play...then decide.

Those people that voted in that poll are on a hardware forum, I think they are in the know about the reviews. Have you read the reviews with the newest drivers? There are no games that the x800 stomps the 6800gt in, none. There are/will be some that the 6800gt will stomp the x800 in.

It's less likely that you can get an X800Pro to perform like an X800XT. Even if it overclocks, there is the pipeline issue. But if I am not mistaken, usually only the VIVO cards can be modded to an XT. And then it may not work right at all. Plus the VIVO card costs more than a 6800GT and it's very likely you can get your GT to perform like an Ultra.

I like ATi just fine, my second computer has an X800Pro in it, however this time I think Nvidia has a better product line at a better price.

Now if this was the X800XT Vs. 6800 Ultra argument that would be different.

No kidding we're comparing GT against a X800vivo flash to XTPE speeds. Wasn't that the topic?

What about new drivers for ATI. I hope you heard.I know they are coming with game specific tweaks. It boosts performance anywhere between 10-20%.

i didnt read the thread, but im just gonna give my opinion on this

the gt-> ultra speeds is an over all easier mod, with less risk than flashing your card and having the pipes be (possibly) defective.

and the x800xt is avaliable now, just not the xtpe. id go for the GT still just because it is my opinion that nvidia has he better architechture this time 'round

my .02

But I don't understand? Goto a ATI child forum and look everyone who's gotten a VIVO been able to get 16pipes to work. I repeat everyone.

sounds to me like Marvelous has a few childhood issues to deal with..well i going to join the fight with ya rancor. Marvelous can become another rick..(extremely wrong and stupid)..oh he just showed his true self. LOL!!!..

now Marvelous plz show us these so called FACTS you seem to have...i would love to see this proof you so claim to have, or did you get this bull shit from rage3d. (which is a joke)
so come on, I am ready for your throw. lets see them [H]ARDCORE facts you seem to have.

must be scared...i see no proof from you at all..all you do is talk shit..where is the bite? all i hear is a yippe.

i'm gonna get a 6800gt and hammer the hell out of it for a couple weeks, if i like it, i'll keep it. if i don't, i'll just return it and get an x800pro.

my two cents: people seem to think that buying one card is like getting a tataoo, you'd think the computer gods said 'CHOSE YOUR CARD WISELY FOR IT SHALL BECOME YOUR SOUL'. not true.

if you buy 6800gt/x800pro and ya don't like it, take it back and get an x800pro/6800gt.

Is there something you want to add?

This thread was about choosing which vid card x800 flash to xtpe or GT to Ultra Speeds. I stated my opinion from the articles I have read here, techreport, anandtech. XTPE does wipe a GT or even an Ultra for that matter. Look at the real resolutions you will be playing 1600x1200 4x AA, 16x aniso I presume if your going to shell out $400+ on a vid card.

All VIVO x800 is a guaranteed. There's not 1 failure. I've read every post for post. Some of them couldn't get to XTPE speeds but they still had all 16 pipes to work.

And my child hood? Okay whatever you say. You don't know nothing about me.

Why not just get the X800XT & overclock to 520/550? That way you get what you want sooner & cheaper, & faster card than the GT.

The X800XT (non-PE) is the same price as the X800 Pro VIVO (~450), BTW. You could think of them as Pre-modded VIVO's that you don't have to mess with.

Thats still a failure...you are not guaranteed shit when you flash or oc. you just contradicted your self...if you can't achive the XTPE speeds then what is the point of flashing? did you gain what you wanted? no. are the extra 4 pipes worth it? do you even KNOW the extra 4 pipes are even STABLE..have you ran them? there disabled for a reason. and it's usauly do to FAILED tests..but you still never showed me evidence of your claim for all the FACTS you have...

KOTOR and Doom3 are the only games I really hear about that really trash ATI, don't know if it's drivers or what, but I wouldn't call that a pounding. But I know how you love your card. So forget it. I voted for the 6800 GT because it is a better buy.. but that I hate seeing people say crap like that like you have some sort of hate for the company like they killed your family. It just sounds retarded.

Oh maybe you will be the first to justify to why i should buy a x800 that uses 2 year old tech, has no new tech, and has a hyped up core and ram...shit even intel makes new cores more than ati does.
