The Truth About Vizio?

I'm here to ask you guys' opinions. I'm a computer enthusiast, but I freely admit that I know very little about the HDTV aspect of displays.

My roommate and I have been looking around for TV's recently. We know the basic specs we are looking for, but I don't know a whole lot about brand names for TVs.

Desired Specs:
  • 40-46"
  • 1080p capable
  • 10,000:1 contrast ratio (or better)
  • 120Hz (or better)
  • $800-1200 USD

I narrowed it down to:

The prices on the two VIZIO sets are better than the two AQUOS - and the tech specs show that the VIZIO sets are technically superior. However, at that good of a price, I am a bit suspect about the listed tech specs of the VIZIO tv's.

Can anyone educate me a little bit? Thanks :D

We are both leaning towards the SHARP E model (first in the list). It is new, meets all of our requirements, and is just at the ceiling of the budget.

We are both more familiar with the SHARP/AQUOS name - but we are doing further research into the VIZIO matter before making any final decisions.

Thank you for the advice! It's definitely worth looking into. However, a question for you:

I know that a few years ago when my brother bought his big-screen LCD tv, part of the reason that he did was because of the burn-through issues that plasma TV's were suffering at the time.

I talked to a guy in the electronics department at SEARS about this a week or so ago, and he assured me that this was no longer an issue with new-generation plasma TV's. However, I also know that you have to take anything you hear from someone working in a brick-and-mortar store with a grain of salt, because they have certain things that they are supposed to be pushing for.

Do you know anything more about the validity of his claims? Is plasma a viable option for a tv that will be used for a moderate to high level of console gaming?

Thanks!

If this is purely for television use, you should buy a plasma, such as the new Panasonic line. Superior contrast, far superior viewing angles, superior black. Only if the room is very bright would be an LCD be better. (Don't believe the insane default settings that appear to make the LCDs look better in a showroom. When you get it home and put it in movie/cinema mode, a good plasma will shine...)

If this is also for PC use, then I'd lean towards an LCD, but not a Sharp. Their pixel structure is not optimized for the display of text...

Thanks, I have been doing quite a bit of reading about it. That was kind of the conclusion that I had come to as well.

As for the PC display. It probably wouldn't be used for computer display more than once or twice a month. I was speaking more of console gaming.

From what I understand, it's ok to game on most newer plasmas (like the Panasonic suggested above) for several hours. Then the content should be switched. Sound about right? Or don't risk it?

I gamed on my Kuro for 9-10 hours one night and I use it for PC stuff and it looks perfectly good still.

Ths is PC monitors forum. You are wasting time here.
Tons of info about TVs:

Even Kuro plasmas (the least affected) can get image retention.
After a proper break-in period Kuros can withstand several hours gaming on condition that several hours of the full screen content follow.
Input lag is about 3 frames.
Low quality cheap plasmas guarantee nothing.

As the dude above mentioned avs forum is where to go for tvs. However I do have a mother in law with a vizio tv and it doesn't look too bad. I myself would only buy something like sharp, sony, panasonic, viewsonic, samsung, etc... However displays in this category look pretty good from vizio. If you're looking for a good display for ps3/xbox 360 its fine just doesn't expect stuff to look good for pc.

Sorry, I saw "displays" and when I came to the forum I saw several posts about HDTV's

Thank you all for the advice though, and I will check out those other forums!
