Actually, if you leave a static image for hours on end, over time, it could burn in. I believe all TV's are subject to having an image burn in... it's just certain TV's are much worse then others.
I wouldn't worry about it unless you literally leave the TV on all day and just have a single image showing with nothing changing. Too much contrast and too bright of picture could make the burn in worse, and happen sooner. Projection TV's use miniature tubes just like regular size TV's, but run much brighter to project the image, and because they are brighter they burn in easier.
This is all from memory, but I might be wrong, so feel free to correct me anyone.
So in short, yes, it's possible, but almost unlikely. Only if you leave a single image on the screen without changing anything for hours on end should you start to give it thought.
EDIT: Also forgot to mention I think brighter colors, like bright red and green are more likely to cause it. On and old project TV I used to have, the bright green "MUTE" got burned in on the upper right hand corner cause it was always left on for hours.

rear-projected display's seem to be the most prone to it

Usual those logos aren't too bad. They'll disappear during commercials and what not. And they are also sometimes transparent, which helps. It's those really bright things that don't leave you have to worry about! Like the solid green "MUTE" that burned in on mine after having it sitting on the screen for hours every other day
Games you have to worry about too, cause they are very bright and colorful, and you almost always have a Health bar or something that is *always* showing when you play. Stuff like that can eventually burn in if you play it all the time. But that's mainly just projection TV's, usually you aren't playing console games long enough to cause any harm to a tube TV.
