I don't think that is the reason. I've heard the same thing about 5850 tri-fire from a guy who's opinion I respect. I've also heard it about 4870x2 quad in the past.

I just think that it was more a myth than anything else. In some cases it can bring on a cpu limitation which can help resolve microstutter.
