"EA today officially announced The Sims 3, which it is touting as its “next-generation flagship PC game.” The game is said to feature a completely new engine and will feature new seamless, open neighborhood, new Create-A-Sim, new realistic personalities and offer unlimited customization.

The open neighborhood concept sees the Sims freely roam around the neighborhood and visit friends… or foes. There will be new environments, including City Hall and even a local park. The Sims 3 will expand on its predecessor by offering almost unlimited customization options to create Sims. There is also the personality factor, letting players attribute each character with five distinct personality traits, helping the Sim interact with other Sims and the environments.

The Sims 3 is expected sometime next year. No console version was mentioned."

"In the next game, the sims will be able to walk freely around their neighbourhoods, visit their pals, and venture to new locations such as City Hall and the local park.

There will also be a "deeper" system for governing how sims behave, called the Realistic Personality System, which will let gamers manipulate five character traits when creating their sims. This opens up a number of possibilities, or as EA puts it: "Will you create the nosy, inappropriate, kleptomaniac grandmother who loves to meddle in other people's business? Or the commitment-phobic, hot-headed punk rocker whose rude nature and childish disposition keeps him from scoring a date?" Apparently, 700 million different combinations await.

Customising both the sims themselves and the items around them will also become an easier and deeper experience, EA says. The upgrades include fine tuning for every part of sims' faces, and a new set of design tools for customising items for their houses."

I will provide more info later and some screenshots. In the meantime, discuss!

Guys across the nation scream in unison, well, maybe not. But I like this game, it's fun.

Agreed, its addicting. I got a good 4-5 months out of The Sims 2. Alot of options to play with and progress your family throughout the game.

I liked the house designing more then the actual gameplay. But, this sounds interesting enough...

And thanks to the wonders of shared development, you will be able to drop your SIMS 3 family onto a random planet in SPORE. Do your SIMS have what it takes to survive, or will they be a quick snack for killer pigfrogs? Good luck, kids.

We've known about The Sims 3 for weeks. The official Sim 3 website went live on March 19th.

I love The Sims, and I'm definitely buying the game (might go halfsies with the girlfriend) because they reduced the attributes bars from eight to three! No more being a slave to them!
