Ok I've spent about 2 weeks and a few hundred dollars troubleshooting this, and I am absolutely clueless still, this is the most frustrating and confusing problem I've ever encountered.
I have random crash to desktop in half the games I try to play and the others run perfectly fine for hours and hours.
Some things I've done:
- Ran memtest86 for 10 hours with no failures.
- Ran Prime95 on each test for a few hours each with no warnings.
- Reverted to directx 8.1 after reading 9.0c caused problems for someone else.
- Disabled sound acceleration.
- Tried several different video drivers.
- Tried several different video cards! (geforce4200, radeon9800 pro, 6600GT)
- Tried 2 different soundcards. (onboard cmedia and sb live!)
- Updated all available motherboard/AGP drivers.
- Tried playing with and without my usb gamepad.
- Tried 2 different power supplies, one 400w +12v/15a the other 480w +12v/18a.
- Totally cleaned out my components of all dust.
- Put my drives on seperate cables.
Has anyone experienced a CTD problem like this before, that only happens with some games and not others? I had this problem with my first 4200 and I had it replaced and everything was fine after that, until now.. but I've tried 3 different video cards so I don't think thats it. If it was a heat issue I am pretty sure I would of encountered crashing in Vampire Bloodlines, that game and its bugs really stress out your system!
I'm looking forward to trying a total reformat but I have to wait until this semester is over, and I'm afraid it's not going to fix the problem anyway.
Any ideas?
