Opened the utility bill Saturday.

Took until Sunday for the shock to settle in.

Same KW/h used as last August, almost dead on (3392 vs. 3362). The total cost doubled. DOUBLED. Last year was $215. Do the math. :eek:

Basic rate charge: $92.20
Fuel purchase surcharge: $302.61

I'm whipped. Between insurance, house repairs and other fiscal swamping, I'm whipped. Striker's Pea Patch is going into dormancy until I can come up with a solution. Sorry, fellow [H]orde members, but I've got to cull it down to the bare minimum for the foreseeable future.

Damn it.

Just damn it.

Sucks that you live that far north and have to run the AC so much. Cooler weathers coming though. Git some pink in the attic and fold on.

For the last few months here in Louisiana (Entergy), there have been "fuel adjustment" charges that have added around $100 to our electricity bills.
 
Man, that sucks - if you need/want to move some comps, I've got free power for the forseeable future. I have good roommates (and a good lock!) so they won't be bothered. Plenty of room under the bed.

Plus, I don't have nearly enough white noise at night... :rolleyes:

 
I feel your pain man, power is a bitch!!!! Im a little over the $200.00 a mo myself.....my high was $240.00 in a new home!!!! :rolleyes:

 
Mine was just over $220 last month. I mean just 6 processors, in an 1100 sq. ft house! :eek: I was only figuring that the bills would be arround $150 tops.
 
If you do find temp homes for your computers, I have enough space for a couple as well.

sucks that your power is so high...guess they'll be down until oil prices go down again.

Hell mine was almost $600 this month. I guess I need to move where the cheap power is.

 
Hearing this makes me love my current apartment situation even more. Currenlty running 4 computers and 2 monitors with "free" electricity. Of course my total rent with internet is $500 for a studio, but I think the "free" electricity and closeness to campus makes it worth it.

Not offline, but a helluva weeding process going on. Two machines downed, and more as they finish what they started. The office borgs are fine, and a couple of A64s will still run, based on power consumed vs. output.

Nothing like what I've been doing, and that's what's killing me. I told Relic, back in the long ago, that the only way you'd stop me Folding was to pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse and have the EMT pull the plug. I feel like I'm going back on my word, and I'm old enough to feel that a man's word is his bond.

I know, I know, it's a volunteer thing. You can retire the troop, you can't stop the reflex.

<sigh>

One Barton and a Palomino downed so far. Three Athlons in the next day, possibly the Duron duallie. This sucks...

This sucks. You're taking down machines that are a hell of a lot more powerful than half the machines I'm running. I hate hearing stuff like this. :( :mad:

When it comes to the Power Company the limit to their ability to screw you is, well limitless.

Last month I was away for 8 days, turned off the computers and three air conditioners. The result was a 3 KWH difference (higher) between the previous months.

I called, I bitched, demanded an explanation and got for the lack of a better term “Dick”

Like the schools and property taxes we are screwed from every angle and nowhere to go.

Damn and Dam it indeed.

Just to add to the fun, my heating bill will double this year as well.........

2 bedroom 1100+ sq ft apt: $425
Internet access: $0.00 (I don't have the money)
Power bill: Around $52/month

That actually went down when I kicked my ex out to around $42/month. I then moved a boxen in so it's probably up to $47/month or so.

Internet access will run me around $45/month when I can finally afford it. Then it will be time to move at least two boxen over. Maybe more if I can build some more before it happens. That should jump my power bill up to around $75 or so I'm figuring. That won't be too bad.

Electric rates for me isn't too bad although I don't remember what they are right now. I'm also really stingy with electricity except for when I'm cooking. I have a TV that doesn't work half the time and is rarely turned on anymore so I don't get power drain from it.

Once I get a second job and get some bills paid down and someone (my son) paid back the money I have had to use I won't worry about a power bill as long as it's not over $100.00/month. At that point I would probably have to look into getting a third job.

 
i'm really sorry to hear this, dude, i hope you can find some temporary housing / insulation to help decrease the bill :(

This just sucks...I am very sorry to hear that your hand has been forced. But fear not, your promise to relic has not been broken. The will is there, just not the means right now. Perhaps you can migrate your boxen to the office or to another folder's house that has the luxury of free juice. Either way, you still fold for 33. :)
 
The solution is clear. I will need to bring that nuclear reactor online after all :p Been saving it for a tight time like this.

Mage, I have a 5port 10/100 switch sitting in a drawer. Yours for cost of shipping. Also, utility bills are tight around here. Winter's coming folks, we'll be able to use our boxen to fold and heat the house at the same time, and it will be the Aussies feeling the heat then. I have 2000 watts worth of gear ready to go right now, waiting for winter when I can use a cold air intake from the window to offset my boxen keeping me toasty.

Actually, I have a 5-port Linksys box sitting at home which RJ is "sort of" using - he has one machine on it... so I could take that if I needed one. Anyways, I don't have any more machines to put up right now. Trying to work on roommates tho. They'll cave sooner or later.

 
I'm up to $285 a month. I may have to stop as well. Unfortunatly for you guys none of the boxen are stuff I would want to give away. The slowest is 2.4 Ghz (With one excption)and I typicaly keep 7 of the 12 running FAH at any one time.

I expect this energy cost BS is going to hurt valuable medical research in ways they are not even considering.

I have plans for one, possibly two of the boxen to "migrate" to work. One more 4U case in a wall of racks wouldn't be noticed. I hope. :D

Wife's comp burned out the power supply, I mean smoke wisping out the back. It may have taken the CPU with it. I hope not, 2500+ Bartons are golden. That would have been one of the survivors, the others being my game machine, the daughter's crate and the SME server. Time to swap parts about, get biggest pointers for least power, and carry on.

From 14 CPUs to 5.

This, definitely sucks. :mad:
 
Maybe we can all switch to solar power in the future. I know my kids would love it.....they're getting tired of running on the treadmill I have hooked to my generator! :D

I've only got 2 running right now, but its soon to be 4.

I'm running 15 + computers and I've been payin $250+/month for awhile. I may have to shut down anything under 2ghz during the evening hours, thats over half the farm.. :(

Have you considered budget billing? Spread the pain out some. I do this. $97 a month all year long, with one catchup payment a year. 6 systems...the bill would have been $210 this month. Bill used to be $75-80ish in the winter, $125 - $140 in the summer (before I added more boxes).

Or if you can get time of day metering (where they charge one rate for daytime use, and another for evening/weekend/holiday use this can be useful too. Example: I pay 16c/kwh during the day (8am - 8pm), and 6c kwh 8pm - 8am and weekends/holidays. If things got too tight, I could turn off the machines from 8am to 8pm, and run them in the evenings. 1/2 the output, 38% of the cost. If I did this to my 6 boxes, I could save $1.08 a day/$32.40 a month.

You can also structure alot of your major electric use during the cheaper period too, like dishwasher, laundry, etc..

The "budget billing" option is something I think we offer, so this looks like a decent idea. It's not like I have to go far to find out... :D

I'm with a electrical coop in PA. I'm reasonably sure that other electric companies offer this though. Ask your local company if they have time of day billing. I'm pretty sure most companies offer the budget type billing in any case.
