After peaking at 205F w/ my stock Intel HSF and applying Arctic 5 and getting down to 160F, I got fed up and just ordered a new HSF.

I ended up ordering a 120MM SilenX Zalman clone HSF. Upon installing it, the retention clip just seemed impossible to screw down and eventually it broke. After many tears, I realized it was installed upside down under the fan so of course it wouldn't screw in backwards.

I ended up super gluing it back as best possible and installed the HSF anyway. I tried turning the computer on and it shutdown without any beeps. The exact same annoying problem I had when I first built the computer.

So I ended up taking the HSF back off and in the process, the super glue came loose of course. The Arctic Silver looks fine on the CPU but I ended up reseating the processor and putting the crap stock HSF back on. Still no boot.

There's only one way to seat the CPU and I just don't see how that could be an issue. After reseating CPU and HSF 8 different times, I finally got it to boot and its running at 170F. Even hotter than before with nothing changing.

What the hell is going on. I'm just so annoyed right now. What would cause it to boot and shutdown like that. Is the CPU overheating and shutting the computer down because there is not enough contact with the HSF. Is it just a fluke and there a problem with the CPU or Motherboard?

Once I can get the CPU to boot up once, it never ends up having the problem again, albeit running hot.

So once again, does this just sound like a HSF seating issue or possibly something going on with the Motherboard, CPU or maybe even the application of Arctic Silver?

I e-mailed SilenX asking if they could send me a new retention clip. Hopefully when I get that, my problems will be resolved. After all thats happened, I have serious doubts.

The fitting of the heatsink/Fan on processor is very important, so you must 1st do this exactly correct, then go further.....This must be a reliable fit.
