The return of the desktop.

I am glad to see a return of the desktop style cases. They offer so much more, in terms of cooling, aesthetics, and give a new angle on modding. I am however a bit confused on the pricing, they seem to be hitting the market with rather high price tags. I gather that most all the computer cases are made overseas and that accounts for some of the price, but for the build quality I am seeing on most of these cases a $100.00 and up price tag just does not fit.

I know most people think HTPC when they see a desktop case rethink your decision.

I want to see a good looking desktop line of case that is stackable. That would be soooo sweet.

Desktop style cases also give heatsink manufactures a bit more tolerance on their weight limits.

So what are your thoughts on desktop cases?

I've built 3 cases from scratch, and I have to say that the easiest one to work on afterwards was definately the desktop style case. Not only do you not have to worry about your HSF or waterblock pulling on your cpu socket, but the video card slot gets some benefit as well (with some of the huge aftermarket coolers out there now, this is a very good thing)

And what's better than a case that you can set the monitor on top of?

God, they are so ugly. I'm sorry but a desktop is hideous not to mention I never found that they had the room for anything.

If you want a desktop just turn your tower on it's side. ;)

:)
Three... :D

From tthe point of view of heatpipes:

Liquid boils at the bottem of the pipe.
Steam rises and condenses higher up the pipe.
Droplets run down the side of the pipe to re-boil.

These cases make a lot of sense too.

I think heatpipe manufacturers are using wicks or something nowdays so that the things can stand side on??

I never liked desk tops back in the mid '80s and I still don't...................... Give me a tower or huge cube anyday......................... :D

Its looks ok yes, not a bad looking case, buts it also $200.

Nope, i think that looks terrible IMO.

but you've gotta agree that this one is pretty slick...

I think that looks just as bad too.

I tend to agree with the person that said the only desktop cases that look good tend to be HTPC cases.

I've got a Travla C137 Mini-ITX case of desktop form factor. Besides the obnoxiously bright stock blue LED, it has a very conservative look and blends into my office very well. It's barely 12 inches wide and 3 inches tall, and my LCD monitor fits on top of it nicely. Total desk space taken? Less than a square foot.

uhhh... the 3 cases that I linked to are all HTPC cases... and only 3 examples of hundreds that I've looked at before deciding to just build my next HTPC into a new entertainment center / TV stand.

I can't see how you can say they offer so much more in terms of cooling with a straight face.

Who said that?

HTPC cases need to be very carefully planned out to get decent airflow. If you just thow the components in, and hook them up with no thought towards cooling, then yea, they'll overheat almost every time. A well planned out & executed HTPC though will run for a long time, with no maintenance needed other than the occasional dusting out with a can of compressed air.

The PS2 cases (desktops) were really fun to work with. Kind of like working with a SFF nowdays except they were all SFF back then. lol

I got a keen eye on that Overture.

Glad to see a few other people that have the same thoughts as me about desktops.

Hehe, you are talking about the IBM PS/2 and not the Playstation 2 right? Didn't know if there were any people around who'd admit to owning one of those. Could be worse, I owned one of THESE abortions.
