I hate to make a cliche thread, but alas, at times life is cliche.
I've been quietly folding for quite some time. I honestly don't remember when I first installed F@H, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I mean, why not use my spare CPU cycles to fight cancer? That was my first reason to fold.
My cpu count went up and down over the years but I always had a box or two folding, at least. Sadly right now I only have one box churning out WUs and I'll be damned if I even know where it is (I think it's sitting in a corner at JHU, but I'm honestly not sure). I remember being around rank 320 on the team at one point, but that was before the we had gpu or smp clients. Climbing the ranks and increasing my PPD, when I actually started paying attention to that stuff, became the second reason I folded.
I really haven't given F@H much thought over the last year or two. My tightening budget, a reduction in the amount of systems I have running/access to, instability in clients, and just a general shift in what I counted important in life, I guess. I stopped caring about the points and more about my writing. Fighting cancer was good and all, but paying the bills comes first, y'know? Borging boxen just doesn't compare to borging SWMBO--hell, just having a SWMBO changes things. I didn't stop having a reason to fold, I just didn't have a reason to make it a priority. So it fell by the wayside.
Last Monday my grandfather passed away. If you guessed cancer, you guessed right. He's not the first person I've known to lose the battle with cancer, but he was the first person I was close to. I don't fold because the spare cpu cycles should do something. I don't fold because I like having lots of points. And I'd like to think that I don't fold out of some reactionary self delusion to feel better (though I'm sure that's part of it). No, none of those.
I fold for a cure.
That's the whole point of the program. That's the slogan. That's the cliche. Those words are how half of the posts end in the threads here. Now I know it for more than words, more than a slogan, and certainly more than just another cliche. It's a truth. I have my reason for folding. I fold for a cure.
How about you?
