The Portal 2 Thread **Warning May Contain Spoilers**

If that's the case then it is a dark day for PC gaming. Silus pointed out in the other Portal 2 thread that the FOV is low...

Actually, the only thing I pointed out, were the post and threads being deleted by Valve in the FoV thread, which claim the FoV is incorrect and there's no way to change it.

One thing I find odd is that the PS3 version (which I finished last Friday) appears to have sharper, more detailed textures than the PC version with the video settings cranked. This is most obvious with fine text. I remember funny writing on a wall from when I played it on the PS3, so I went over to check it out again on PC and I couldn't make out anything. On the PS3 it is totally readable while on the PC it is an illegible blur.

The PC textures seemed softer to begin with, but I thought that was the result of the PS3 being 720p while my PC is outputting to 1440p, thus making any imperfections more apparent on the PC. The text issue tells me something different though. I wonder if that is the product of Blu Ray having more storage room for more detailed textures (Portal 2 on PC is already 11GB), or if it is some sort of oversight in the PC version and they just need to throw in an even higher texture setting.

The PS3 version also has much sharper textures than the 360 version: http://www.gameblurb.net/featured/versus-portal-2-screenshot-comparison/

The 360 actually looks a bit closer to the PC version than the PS3. Obviously the PC version has a higher framerate, but the difference in texture sharpness is quite noticeable. I may post screenshots tomorrow night to compare and contrast.

Do you think this could be a factor of sitting farther from the screen?

I do see what you are talking about though, the writing on the wall is blurry:

The game itself still looks great though.

Another game with FOV issues? What the fuck. I am picking Portal up after class today, glad I only paid $35 for it.

I personally don't see any issue with the FOV, but you can be the judge of that and checkout my screenshots:

http://steamcommunity.com/id/Bl4ckH4wk/screenshots/?tab=&showdate=1&filter=app_620

I'm only about an hour in so there should be minimal spoilers. I get the feeling a lot of people bitching on the steam forums are complaining based on the size of the portal gun and not the FOV of the world. I'm assuming the viewmodel_fov is going to be locked just like L4D2.

I played a bit of co-op last night and got to the 4th set of tests (the excursion tubes) and I have to say this is the best game I have played in a long time. Performance is fantastic on my midlevel card (6870 yet I can run 4x AA at 2560x1600 flawlessly. I cannot wait to get back to the game and play it more.

Sorry. Is there any truth to the FOV problems?
No. The default FOV is the same as it is in CS:S. Same as it is in Quake. Same as it is in Doom 3.

Bring up the console and type 'fov_desired'. Default value is 90. The cvar in the Source engine is bound to the horizontal FOV, which the engine 'pads' as the aspect ratio increases. According to Gary McTaggart, in an e-mail he sent to me last year:
FOV is specified as horizontal FOV if you are running in a 4:3 aspect ratio mode. If you are running in a widescreen mode, we add extra information on the sides. This is done so that the server, which can change what the current FOV is set to, doesn't have to know what aspect ratio the client is running at.

played 2.5 hours or so last night. So far very fun. It looks good, things are very polished, and it runs very well. No complains right now, fov is fine.

FOV seems the same to me as in any other Valve game since HL2. But I don't pay a ton of attention to those things. The console save message is pretty inexcusable. And I'm not a fan of the COD-style pop up messages telling you where buttons and blocks are. Any way to turn those off?

But none of that changes the fact that it's an excellent experience (at least as far as I'm up to).

Higher res textures for PS3, console UI appearing in the PC port, Valve pushing for Steam on PS3... seems like the console dollars have lured yet another PC dev to the promised land.

fear mongerers unite~

Have you personally verified that the PS3 textures are larger than the PC? This "Console UI", I don't see it...if you're refering to the "please don't turn off your console" who really gives a fuck about one word. Technically a PC is a "Console". Valve is pushing for Steam on PS3 because it's an open platform and they would have the ability to push out updates to their games without having to charge ala xbox live. That's pretty much Valve's development model. Release a game, release a bunch of free updates to keep the community happy, extend the life of the game and generate new sales over time.

I'm sorry...what ? Technically the PC is a "Console" ?

I can't possibly believe you went there in trying to defend Valve...It's...well...mind boggling...

People throw the word port around without even knowing what it means. GTA 4 was a game that was ported to the PC, and poorly. Portal 2 and Crysis 2 were co-developed on all platforms simultaneously, no porting involved. I'm guessing most of the people using it incorrectly are not intending it to be a factual statement. If it were up to me it'd be in the swear filter. ;)

I'm merely trying to make a point that there's no reason to be up in arms about little semantic bs like that. Console, PC whatever it gets the ponit across. They should just use a generic term "system" for both sides so there's no bitching.

Because my backlog is nearing 100 games I think. :p And on top of that I want to play some games again. It's sad.

That's a good reason then :)

Anyone see this yet?

Valve's Response

I'm not really worried about it, the game performs wonderfully and is so far everything I wanted it to be. It even has a windowed-maximized mode which is something I have not seen much of outside of MMOs.

Fuck you guys. Just ordered it. I probably would have been fine until it drops to dirt cheap soon enough but you guys had to go around saying how great it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Downloading off steam now....started playing the first again last night...as I never finished it.

It gets a lot more fun when you get to play with the goo:)

Anybody know how many chapters there are?

9 Chapters.

Really fun, much better than the first game and easily three times the length (if not more). Haven't even tried co-op yet but I hear a lot of good things.

Anybody Find the hidden experiment yet?

Yeah,

Made me sad we still don't know anything about Episode 3/HL3 :(

last night I had 37 items in the enrichment center. today, gone.
guess that was a fluke.
anyway I don't think the economy will take off for this game
since unless you play with randoms you will probably only play with a few people
thus not as much need or purpose to show off.

Yeah,
(spoiler removed)

How hard was it to find? Something you really have to look for, or fairly obvious?

I did some digging this morning and it seems that it is a limited bug for some people. Textures revert to low settings even when set to high in the settings menu. Entering "mat_picmip -1" in the console fixes this, then PC textures look like they do on the PS3 (nice and detailed), but then it reverts back to low texture once a new map loads.

Again, it isn't an issue with the assets in the game, it is a problem with the config file not acting properly and settings not being applied in the menu. It doesn't seem to be a widespread problem either, so that's good.

Here are some screenshots, some spoilers obviously so avoid clicking if you haven't played the game:

You can read even the tiniest text here: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/559780497140314383/0C3D5749281DFBF2ED470CD55B320958B906A4C3/

Science experiment. Note the "problem" sheet. This made me laugh when I saw it on PS3: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/559780497140311761/E8FEC56B90596A4F1B8685EE1D6288B445D31A34/

The thing is that I might have attributed it to poor texture work on Valve's part if I hadn't played it on PS3 already and seen how it should actually look, and that's just wrong.

Haven't played SP yet, trying to complete Portal 1 again before I tackle Portal 2 SP and can't remember how to get past that part in the escape where you are in the big tall room with turrets.

In case you haven't figured it out yet

There are 2 tilted surfaces on the opposite sides of the room, simply use the lower one to get a portal on the higher one and use that to throw yourself to the top. Obviously take out the turrets first by sneaking up to them. :)

Also FML I'm buying this right now! You can't stop me

(IDK if someone already covered this earlier in this thread; I'm still waiting to play the game so I'm avoiding all spoilers and therefore didn't read back any of the other posts. If this is already posted info, I apologize.)

My Ps3 version from Amazon came this morning. The code that the Ps3 version comes with does not just dump straight into Steam without any Ps3 work; I tried it, hoping that I could punch in the code and DL the game at home while I'm at work (using TeamViewer to access my home system). Steam told me that the game had not been pulled up on Ps3 yet and the code would not work until that has been done and my account has been tied together (PSN+Steam). Just an FYI for anyone out there....don't let any friends buy any Ps3 Steam codes (unless they're not your friend and you're trying to be evil :D).

I saw one guy who said he played through on the PS3 and it will be about a 6-10 hr game for people. Anyone finish yet - and how long was the game-play without replaying?

Heard more bad things than good about this. Glad I didn't pre-order it. Brink's out soon, by the time I'd done with that and TW2 (provided they don't suffer from similar issues on release) P2 might have dropped enough in price for me to justify buying it.

did he say if that was single player only or both single player and co-op?
