Lately, I have been reading some complaints on public photography forums (such as www.nikonians.com and www.fredmiranda.com) about people being stopped and questioned, sometimes detained and had their equipment confiscated, just because they were taking pictures. Pictures of public places, where photography is allowed. So far I have only seen it happen with people using DSLR or similar camera, mainly because of their size, and how much attention they attract.

Either the police assume that you could be linked to terrorists, because you are taking pictures of big public buildings, or that you are a perv because you are taking pics at playgrounds (because of kids) or at the beach.

This Page Has some info, and a downloadable/printable PDF on what:
A) You can do when confronted by the authorities
B) The authorities can do when they confront you
C) What private parties (think rent-a-cop) can do when they confront you

I have luckily had not had to use the knowledge I gained from it, but I do keep 1 copy in my wallet, and 4-6 copies in my camera bag.

:edit:
here are a few links I found regarding this topic...it is very hard to search for stuff like this :(
