I got bored and i wanted to know wut the perfect current pc would be under the price of $4000.

:( :) :D

cyrix with a pr 133 rating. It gets hot enough to melt the surrounding socket.

Other than that probably dual opterons/xeons. (and everything else :D)

Try buying a whole PC for that much. You might get more use from it.

Rofl! A CPU for under $4000? You can get tons. I dunno about the super high end stuff, sparc or whatnot.

But if I were to put together a system now, I'd use a Mobile Barton 2400+ for sure. Not really into the 64 bit field yet. I had an A64 but didn't feel like investing in all that new hardware.

This is what I'd do.

Mobile XP 2400+
2x512 of best ram you could find. PC4k or something like that
DFI LanParty B
SP97 with Panaflo 120mm Low or Med or even Hi (make sure you get the Neo backplate)
With that budget you could try watercooling! :D
2x74GB Raptors in raid (becareful, raid performance isn't that good with the DFI, try the NF7 if you perfer HDD performance over sheer massive FSBs!)
2x160GB Baracudas

Prolly pick up one of those nv40s with that budget too hehe

M68k. Always has been, always will be!

68k for life! :D :p

Under $4000? Hmm, I wonder what a POWER5 "brick" costs (they come in huge "bricks", with four processors per "brick", two cores per processor and like 30-40 megs of level 3 cache).... :D

can I just put in a $4000 bid for that 11000 Opteron super computer Cray is building (for whoever they were building it for)?

Well, I'm not sure the exact number but it was a lot bigger than the VT computer. Dunno when it'll be done. I just remember reading about it in the past month.

edit:
here's some info
seems to be old news
Some figures say over 10000 chips, others say 16000. Either way its a lot and its $90 million and its supposed to overthrow the current fastest.

I'll take two, and the mansion to fit it in.

Just to note, the 10000+ (or 16000) cpu system won't be delivered until later this year.

edit^2:

Here's another opteron project...
Linux Opteron super comp that sounds a lot like the big mac
When I was searching I found mention of several more systems much like this.
