The PC Is Dead! How do I know? Because this guy said so. Duh. Thank [H] reader Railhaus for the linkage.

In this iPhone-crazed, connected-TV obsessed, high-speed Internet world, the desktop computer is no longer relevant. All those reams of desk-bound e-mail have given way to terse texts from Blackberries. Those zippy, graphics-intensive games are now the domain of consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

He does make a good points. For most people desktop computers are dieing off. They are moving toward more and more stuff being done by other means. Students are moving to tablets, netbooks, laptops. How many kids do you see bring full sized desktops with them to college anymore?
 
Hehe, that guy is funny and PC sales and GPU sales say different.
 
mmmm yea! I still think the best way to play the games with intense graphics and easy to control is still on a PC. ;) PC is getting stronger with the modding, lightning, speed, games deviced. Desktop are still faster than laptops, hopefully the laptops will get faster in the near future.

I'll never stop using a desktop PC. Console games suck and mobile devices don't have the power or screen size to satisfy.
 
The mobile space is going to become a monster of a market and there is certainly no doubt about that. But the desktop PC isn't going anywhere.
 
This guy just wants to be one of the first to say it just in case it comes true, and pigs fly.

Because college students are representative of the actual consumer market? No. Many of them don't even have jobs.

People who never needed a computer in the first place are just now realizing they didn't need a computer. Those of us that actually use a computer for what it was designed actually still need them. I cannot do design work on a tablet or a phone.

It's like some people woke up and it was 2011.
 
Article makes a fair point that for a lot of people a PC isn't needed for home But then, was it ever really? These are people who would buy the cheapest computer they could and never really use it.

But for people who know why they bought a PC in the first place it will never die.
 
This just in, home PC kills pencil, pen, and paper notebook market....

The desktop market is "dying" because it's not growing as fast as the portable market (laptop, tablet, handset). It's definitely slowing down and no doubt in the future will start shrinking. A bit early to declare it dead, IMO.

Unfortunately this guy has a point. For the status quo, the PC is dead. Anybody who doesn't want to be bothered with the "complexities" of the PC as we know it will opt for these computing appliances. Game consoles, phones, tablets, and netbooks will be the main stream for consumers.

Will the PC ever completely die? No, but it will become the equivalent of modded race cars for super enthusiasts, professionals, and posers.

Desktops are not dead, they are merely changing, the companies that refuse to keep up with the change will fail, those that lead the innovation will reap the rewards. Apple will not be the desktop innovator imho. Work environments still need the use and applications of a desktop, pads and notebooks are subpar when it comes to intensive word, excel, photography, video and graphics work, the ability to add and remove monitors (not to mention upgrade sizing), have the power to push the system, and a full sized keyboard, and separate mouse. Let me ask you this, when was the last time you tried doing a full report on an iPad, not easy to type anything over 1000 words even with the added keyboard. Laptops are only marginally better, but when I do web work, or a presentation or report, I prefer to do the full project on my desktop and use my lappy for updates and last minute changes.

Small can only take you so far until you need to see the big picture :)

Seriously, so all this guy does on his computer is read email and surf the web? I mean he doesn't have ANY real programs, and he doesn't play PC games? Then sure he can get by with his smartphone and his web connected TV. And since that applies to many people these days... they can follow suit, if they can afford it. But my guess is that they still have some crappy PC collecting dust at home, and they will just use that smartphone because they think its "Cool".

Me? I guess I'll just have to start "living in the past". I just don't want to be "connected" all the time. Sometimes its really nice to disconnect and bask in the "digital silence" for a bit... You know go for a walk. It can be very therapeutic for both the mind and the body.
 
He has some good points- I have stated in the past the biggest threat to PC Gaming is not the consoles- it's the netpads and smart phones. People are not going to game on a PC if they don't have a PC. I know the argument is that "PC and GPU sales say otherwise"- however I wonder how true that is if you only count sales to indivuals who are using a PC for home use and not include sales to business.
 
The PC will never die for productive tasks but sure for brain dead stuff appliances will do. But I do think that people still like PCs for their flexibility and ability to download pr0n and warez.;)
 
People on this forum are buying 2 - 4 GPUS to play eyefinity on their 6 screens...

So we've got these non PC buying cheapskates covered.
 
After returning from a computer trade show John R. Quain should have realized that little to no marketing of PC products represents a saturated and well established PC market unworthy of the kind of hack competition you might find at a trade show.

Cheap, controversial headline over a weak article. But hey, thanks to HardOCP they get all kinds of ad revenue.
 
I do think desktops are on the decline for the average user. But desktops are going to stay strong among hardcore gamers and enthusiasts.
 
Well, it will die at some point out in the future, atleast from an entertainment point of view, so will beefy CPU's and GPU's, aswell as the [H] will die with them.
But it's not the consoles/handholds that will kill it, it is MEMORY that will render them obsolete.
Imagine an amount of RAM (or ROM rather) large enough to hold all combinations of a 1920x1080x32 display, then you can say byebye to high-end cpu's and gpu's as they wont be needed, any old cpu/gpu would be able to show whatever using very little computer power, a 2 hour movie take a second to download as it would only need to be a few MB, an index of what pictures (stored in the ROM chip) it's supposed to show.
Games could be pre-rendered and all the cpu has to do is figuring out the physics, but then we could talk about making a physics ROM chip with all stored combinations :D

Usage of the word "zippy' automatically removes all sense of credibility from anything you say or are about to say for the next 15 years.
 
I think the shift to mobile computing is definitely a big trend.

I'm a big time hardforum guy, but I find myself using my iPhone, Netbook, and my laptop much more than my desktop these days.
 
Simple physics dictates that the greater amount of space of the desktop will allow for greater processing power than whatever is currently available in mobile form. This will always be attractive to some people, thus the PC will never die.
 
The common standard home Desktop is a market with a short life,
Most people I see are migrating to Netbooks, laptops, or Smart phones (droid or iphony)

the desktop will have a home in business access terminals, HTPCs, HEPC(Home entertainment PC) and highend gaming computers.

the trouble is the gap from the Business terminals and Gaming PC's is large and getting larger. People either want powerful fast computers, or lowpower Atoms on Steroids (i3's) for business PC's
