The crew at Tech Knowledge Arena have taken a look at Nikko’s R2-D2 DVD projector today and, even if you are not a big Star Wars fan, you have to admit it looks pretty cool. Hit the link for all the info and pictures, I snagged these to get you started:

Nikko America have a coveted license from Lucasfilm Limited to build this one half scale R2-D2 look alike, which plays eleven snippets from the movies and flashes blue, red and green lights in familiar places, just like C3-PO’s little pal does in the movies. The product comes complete with a remote control shaped like a Millenium Falcon, which sits on a stand that plays sounds made by the notorious ship. The cockpit and propulsion system even light up! (I wonder if you can see a wookee inside?)

I'm sure Nikko has no idea how many of these will get snatched up in a heartbeat when it gets released.

Looks like I posted too soon. I just looked at the office site for these. http://www.nikkor2d2.com/

There will be a DVD projector one, and a wireless webcam one. The have videos of both. Looks like they will only be making a limited number of these. So my guess is that the will cost a lot.

4000 units of each in europe, couldn't hear the USA #s.

Anyone elses first thoughts about these involve putting a computer inside the projector version????

That's already been done by several R2-D2 replica builders. Personally, I'd rather have a Princess Leis "Slave Girl" holoprojector. :D

Damn, talk about over-priced projectors...

Sure it looks great but I would have at least expected better-than-DVD resolution.

I wonder if R2D2 will translate all audio into his language. Imagine putting in Lost DVD and then you watch it and all you hear is whistling and beeping.

;)
